Excerpt from Medals of Honor Issued by the War Department, Up to and Including October 31, 1897: With the Laws, Orders, and Regulations Relative to the Medal, the Ribbon to Be Worn With the Medal, and the Knot to Be Worn in Lieu of the Medal Under the Joint Resolution of Congress approved May 2, 1896, a medal of honor ribbon of the new pattern, and a bowknot to be worn in lieu of the medal, will be issued to any person, applying therefor, to whom the medal has heretofore been awarded. Whenever new ribbons thus issued shall have been lost, destroyed, or rendered unfit for use, without fault or neglect on the part of the persons to whom they were issued, other ribbons may be issued to replace them; but the Join-t Resolution of May 2, 1896, does not authorize a similar replacement of bowknots that may have been lost, destroyed, or rendered unfit for use, and in no case will more than one bowknot be issued to or for any one person.any reason to doubt that such ribbon was lost, destroyed, or rendered unfit for use, without fault or neglect on the part Of the person to whom it was issued.
