Book Description
This specification includes detailed requirements for a fiber optic cable splice compliant with AS5405. Fiber optic cable design characteristics are uniquely related to various aerospace vehicle applications. As a result, splices are necessarily constructed for specific cable types. Evaluation of each splice performance shall be with the cable type for which it was intended. Typically, mechanical fiber optic splices have unique assembly instructions. Splices that are qualified to the same detail specification must be assembled using the same procedure and tools. All assembly instructions shall be presented and documented in accordance with this specification.

Mechanical Splice for Aerospace Fiber Optic Cables

Mechanical Splice for Aerospace Fiber Optic Cables PDF Author: AS-3 Fiber Optics and Applied Photonics Committee

Book Description
This document defines performance standards which mechanical fiber optic cable splices must meet to be accepted for use in aerospace platforms and environments. Aerospace fiber optic cables frequently need to be spliced, both for original installation and for repair. Key requirements include low insertion loss, high return loss, ease of installation under difficult situations, and mechanical and environmental stability, suitable for the adverse conditions in aircraft. Expedient mechanical splicing can offer advantages of rugged and relatively inexpensive installation equipment, and the finished cable restorations may not be required to be permanent. An important goal of expedient splicing is to restore satisfactory system operation, as quickly as possible, to complete a mission and return an aircraft safely to a secure location. Mechanical fiber optic cable splices have long existed in the telecommunications industry, but they were never designed, nor are they generally suitable, for challenging aerospace applications. The industry needs agreed-upon performance standards for mechanical fiber optic cable splices suitable for aerospace service.

Fusion Splice for Aerospace Fiber Optic Cables

Book Description
This document defines performance standards which fiber optic cable splices must meet to be accepted for use in aerospace platforms and environments. Aerospace fiber optic cables frequently need to be spliced, both for original installation and for repair. Standards exist for mechanical splices in fiber cables, but none has yet been created for fusion spliced cables. Fusion splices can offer superior performance in insertion loss, return loss, and mechanical and environmental stability, suitable for long-term/permanent installation in aircraft. The industry needs agreed-upon performance standards for fiber optic cable fusion splices in aerospace service. This revision corrects an error in paragraphs 4.5.3 and 4.5.5. The original language of 4.5.5 failed to specify that it was intended to apply to the cumulative changes in insertion loss over all the tests in any one test group. Paragraph 4.5.3 applies to the change in insertion loss in any one test. Obviously the requirement of 4.5.3 should be smaller than that of 4.5.5: 0.05 dB versus 0.10 dB, but the numbers were reversed. This revision corrects the error.

Splicer, Fusion, Fiber Optic, Aerospace

Book Description
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines fiber optic fusion splicers acceptable for the installation and repair of fiber optic interconnects in aerospace applications. Two different application environments are defined, depending on whether there is risk of flammable vapor or hazardous atmosphere being present. Equipment suited to flammable or hazardous environments may be over specified for factory, depot, or other relatively safe environments. To address these different application environments, two types of fusion splicer will be specified in applicable detail specifications: Type I. For hazardous environments specifically including potentially flammable or explosive atmospheres. Type II. For environments in which it is established that there is no risk of flammable or explosive vapors being present. Successful use of fiber optic interconnects in high-performance platforms and applications depend on viable technologies for their repair and installation. Splicing is often desirable, either to repair a damaged interconnect or to install it, particularly where it is difficult or impossible to access all necessary locations for complete removal and replacement. However, reliable aerospace cable splices must endure conditions as adverse as those for which the original cable was specified. In addition, the splicing technology must be usable with a high degree of reliability under difficult aerospace working conditions. Mechanical splices have shown some promise for the repair of multi-mode aerospace fiber cables, but they face daunting difficulties in splicing single mode fiber cables, which are being ever more seriously considered for new and upgraded systems. Fusion splicing has long been accepted in the telecom industry for making the highest performance fiber splices, both single mode and multi-mode, but the technology has not yet been found adaptable to stricter aerospace requirements. This standard is intended to define fusion splicers suitable for these requirements.

Fusion Splicing for Optical Fibers

Fusion Splicing for Optical Fibers PDF Author: AS-3 Fiber Optics and Applied Photonics Committee

Book Description
This document provides an orientation to fusion splicing technology for optical fibers and fiber optic cable. It is intended for managers, designers, installers, and repair and maintenance personnel who need to understand the process of fusion splicing. This technology is widely used in telecommunications and industrial applications, and is finding acceptance in aerospace applications. The aerospace industry has successfully integrated fiber optics as a viable technology for transmission of light. Fiber optic connectors, both for new connections and field repairs, continue to present issues with acquisition and life cycle costs. Fusion splices can be used for permanent fiber connections with a significant reduction in cost and improvement in loss and stability. Another application being discussed is the use of fusion splicing to splice pre-installed fiber optic cable assemblies onto pigtailed connectors, allowing non-terminated cables to be easily routed into a structure and terminated during the final assembly phase. Specifically designed fusion splicers can be used in explosive environments found in aerospace.
