Book Description
Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is a powerful technique for understanding the viscoelastic properties of materials. It has become a powerful tool for chemists, polymer and material scientists, and engineers. Despite this, it often remains underutilized in the modern laboratory. Because of its high sensitivity to the presence of the glass transition, many users limit it to detecting glass transitions that can’t be seen by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This book presents a practical and straightforward approach to understanding how DMA works and what it measures. Starting with the concepts of stress and strain, the text takes the reader through stress–strain, creep, and thermomechanical analysis. DMA is discussed as both the instrument and fixtures as well as the techniques for measuring both thermoplastic and thermosetting behavior. This edition offers expanded chapters on these areas as well as frequency scanning and other application areas. To help the reader grasp the material, study questions have also been added. Endnotes have been expanded and updated. Features Reflects the latest DMA research and technical advances Includes case studies to demonstrate the use of DMA over a range of industrial problems Includes numerous references to help those with limited materials engineering background Demonstrates the power of DMA as a laboratory tool for analysis and testing

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
A concise textbook bridging quantum theory and spectroscopy! Designed as a practical text, Quantum Mechanical Foundations of Molecular Spectroscopy covers the quantum mechanical fundamentals of molecular spectroscopy from the view of a professional spectroscopist, rather than a theoretician. Written by a noted expert on the topic, the book puts the emphasis on the relationship between spectroscopy and quantum mechanics, and provides the background information and derivations of the subjects needed to understand spectroscopy including: stationary energy states, transitions between these states, selection rules, and symmetry. The phenomenal growth of all forms of spectroscopy over the past eight decades has contributed enormously to our understanding of molecular structure and properties. Today spectroscopy covers a broad field including the modern magnetic resonance techniques, non-linear, laser and fiber-based spectroscopy, surface and surface-enhanced spectroscopy, pico- and femtosecond time resolved spectroscopy, and many more. This up-to-date resource discusses several forms of spectroscopy that are used in many fields of science, such as fluorescence, surface spectroscopies, linear and non-linear Raman spectroscopy and spin spectroscopy. This important text: Contains the physics and mathematics needed to understand spectroscopy Explores spectroscopic methods the are widely used in chemistry, biophysics, biology, and materials science Offers a text written by an experienced lecturer and practitioner of spectroscopic methods Includes detailed explanations and worked examples Written for chemistry, biochemistry, material sciences, and physics students, Quantum Mechanical Foundations of Molecular Spectroscopy provides an accessible text for understanding molecular spectroscopy.

Mechanical Analysis of PEM Fuel Cell Stack Design

Mechanical Analysis of PEM Fuel Cell Stack Design PDF Author: Ahmet Evren Firat
Publisher: Cuvillier Verlag
ISBN: 3736992572
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 131

Book Description
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack was analyzed from a mechanical point of view with the help of measurements and simulations in this study. The deflection of the fuel cell stack was measured with the help of the experimental set-up under operating conditions. The effects of cell operating parameters and cyclic conditions on the mechanical properties of the fuel cell stack were investigated. In order to extend the mechanical analysis of the fuel cells, two computational models were established containing the geometrical features in detail. A large-scale fuel cell stack model was built for the thermomechanical analysis. The second model was built on a cross-section geometry for the electrochemical analysis including fluid dynamics. The internal stress distribution and buckling of fuel cell stack were examined. The influence of the mechanical compression on the cell performance and squeezing of the gas diffusion layers are investigated. A design procedure is developed for fuel cell stack regarding the durability and performance from a mechanical point of view.

Mechanical Spectroscopy II, MS-2

Mechanical Spectroscopy II, MS-2 PDF Author: L. B. Magalas
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
This book comprises the proceedings of the Second International School on Mechanical Spectroscopy; presented here as invited lectures (Part I) and contributed papers (Part II). After having originated merely as a technique for the study of internal friction, mechanical spectroscopy has developed strongly, during the past decade, into a tool which is now indispensable for making advances in the creation of new materials. This book will therefore provide an excellent reference source for every researcher working in the field.

3D Discrete Element Workbench for Highly Dynamic Thermo-mechanical Analysis

3D Discrete Element Workbench for Highly Dynamic Thermo-mechanical Analysis PDF Author: Damien Andre
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119239788
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
Complex behavior models (plasticity, cracks, visco elascticity) face some theoretical difficulties for the determination of the behavior law at the continuous scale. When homogenization fails to give the right behavior law, a solution is to simulate the material at a meso scale in order to simulate directly a set of discrete properties that are responsible of the macroscopic behavior. The discrete element model has been developed for granular material. The proposed set shows how this method is capable to solve the problem of complex behavior that are linked to discrete meso scale effects. The first book solves the local problem, the second one presents a coupling approach to link the structural effects to the local ones, this third book presents the software workbench that includes all the theoretical developments.
