Book Description
In the recent decade a quantum leap has been made in production of aluminum alloys and new techniques of casting, forming, welding and surface modification have been evolved to improve the structural integrity of aluminum alloys. This book covers the essential need for the industrial and academic communities for update information. It would also be useful for entrepreneurs technocrats and all those interested in the production and the application of aluminum alloys and strategic structures. It would also help the instructors at senior and graduate level to support their text.

Book Description
SiC particulate reinforced A1-2%Mg composites were produced at volume fractions 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 by inert atmosphere ball milling followed by Hot Isostatic Pressing consolidation and extrusion. The SiC particulate sizes evaluated were 5 microns, 1 micron, and 0.2 microns. The processing sequences were carefully controlled to minimize oxygen contamination. The resulting microstructures of the as-extruded materials showed a very uniform distribution of particulates within the matrix. Ultimate strength, 0.2% yield strength, and modulus of elasticity increased with decreasing SiC particulate size: 1 micron SiC-A1 matrix showed the highest elongation. Fractures originated at inclusions rich in iron, chromium, and nickel. These contaminants seemed to come from the mill chamber and/or the hardened steel balls during ball milling. Keywords: Silicon carbide, Composites, Ball milling, Microstructure.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Silicon-Carbide Particle-Reinforced Aluminum

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Silicon-Carbide Particle-Reinforced Aluminum PDF Author: R. Arsenault
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ceramic-matrix composites
Languages : en
Pages : 10

Book Description
Increasingly stringent structural and electronic packaging requirements have exceeded the capabilities of traditionally used metallic materials in many applications. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are potential replacements. Silicon-carbide particle-reinforced aluminum (SiCp/Al) is an attractive candidate because of its excellent mechanical properties, tailorable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and high thermal conductivity. At present, there is very limited property data available for this material. This paper presents material properties of selected SiCp/Al composites, evaluated at the General Electric Astro Space Division, including a discussion of the test methods used in their evaluation.

Book Description
Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.

Silicon Carbide Particulate Reinforced Aluminum Alloys Matrix Composites Fabricated by Squeeze Casting Method

Silicon Carbide Particulate Reinforced Aluminum Alloys Matrix Composites Fabricated by Squeeze Casting Method PDF Author: Adem Onat

Book Description
Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) are now attracting enormous interest, because of their superiority in strength, stiffness, wear resistance, elevated temperature strength or other engineering properties. Parallel to commercialisation, there are research centres throughout the world that are actively researching further development and exploitation of net or near net shape fabrication process. In this book, the production and characterisation of SiC particles reinforced Al alloy matrix composites produced by squeeze casting are investigated. The effects of volume fraction of SiC on microstructure, mechanical properties are examined as well. Also the results of the production of gravity cast matrix alloy, to determine the effect of pressure on microstructure and properties are described in this book.
