Book Description
Excerpt from The Biology of Twins (Mammals) The present volume brings together for the first time a considerable mass of data dealing with the phenomenon of twins in man and other mammals. Twins are so inherently interesting to so many people that it is hoped by the writer that some light on how twins happen will be welcomed by the general reader as well as by the biologist. There are many thoroughly interesting and nontechnical phases of twin-biology that will appeal to anyone who is a twin or has personal acquaintance with twins. There must be certain other phases/of the subject, however, that are largely of value to the professional biologist. It has been the aim of this book to satisfy both the general and the technical reader without sacrificing unduly the demands of simplicity, on the one hand or of scientific adequacy on. Book Description
Excerpt from A Twin-Bomb Method for the Accurate Determination of Pressure-Volume-Temperature Data and a Simple Method for the Accurate Measurement of High Pressures To the larger of the two bombs there is now added, in the form of fine shot or wire for example, the right amount of a material having negligible vapor pressure and negligible (or known) compressibility, to adjust the volumes to exact equality. There is some advantage in using for this purpose the material of the bomb itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Measurements The close attention to every detail and the exercise of deliberate judgment which are required in every experiment if a worthy result is to be obtained, tend to produce a habit of accuracy which is of inestimable value. This training is obtained only when every effort is made to get the very best result that the time allowed for the experiment and the apparatus employed will permit. Before observations on any experiment are begun, the theory of the experiment should be mastered as well as the functions of the various parts of the apparatus which is to be used. Without such study, necessary observations may be omitted or taken in the wrong way, and apparatus whose value depends upon its accuracy may be injured permanently because of a lack of knowl edge about its delicate parts. Furthermore it is important to determine the degree of accuracy of every result which is obtained. Errors - For various reasons it is impossible to obtain the absolute value of an unknown quantity. Any measurement is affected, to a greater or less extent, by errors which may be classified under the two heads: constant and accidental. As examples of constant errors may be mentioned the following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
