Book Description
Excerpt from Measurements of Some Achievements in Arithmetic The purpose of this monograph is to set forth the results of an attempt to derive a series of scales in the fundamental Opera tions of arithmetic. Thus the problem is closely related to the general movement for the measurement of educational products by means of objective scales. The method followed in the development of these scales is most clearly related to the methods used by Dr. Buckingham1 in the development of his Spelling Scale and by Dr. Trabue in the completion-test Language Scales.2 In the development of these scales the fundamental' idea was to derive a series of scales which would indicate the type of problems and the difficulty of the problems that a class can solve correctly. Accordingly, each of the scales is composed of as great a variety of problems as the fundamental operations can well permit. These problems, beginning with the easiest that can be found, gradually increase in difficulty until the last ones in each series are so difficult that only a relatively small percentage of the pupils in the eighth grade are able to solve them correctly. In the determination of the relative difficulty of these problems, the relative per cents of correct answers Obtained by submitting them to large numbers of school children were taken as a basis. Arithmetic Determining the Achievement of Pupils in the Addition of Fractions

Arithmetic Determining the Achievement of Pupils in the Addition of Fractions PDF Author: UNKNOWN. AUTHOR
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781331333845
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
Excerpt from Arithmetic Determining the Achievement of Pupils in the Addition of Fractions: Bulletin No; VII. Of the Department of Educational Investigation and Measurement; March, 1916 During the past few years educational measurement has been applied to arithmetic more than to any other subject, largely because of the ease with which papers can be scored. This application of educational measurement has been largely limited to work with integers. In Boston, the Courtis Standard Tests, Series A or B, have been given since 1912. Until December, 1915, no other phases of arithmetic work were subjected to scientific measurement. Inasmuch as a system for giving the Courtis tests has been worked out, and also because definite improvement in the use of whole numbers is being secured, the time seemed appropriate for extending educational measurement to other phases of arithmetic. As a result, a group of teachers and masters was selected in December, 1914, to constitute a Committee on Standards in Arithmetic, for the purpose of making a study of the problems involved in the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. An Investigation of Certain Abilities, Fundamental to the Study of Geometry (Classic Reprint)

An Investigation of Certain Abilities, Fundamental to the Study of Geometry (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John Harrison Minnick
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267982875
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
Excerpt from An Investigation of Certain Abilities, Fundamental to the Study of Geometry In 1911 - 12 the author had charge of about forty pupils in second-term plane geometry in the Bloomington, Indiana, high school. Most of these pupils came from good homes and apparently should have been able to do satisfactory work. Such, however, was not the case. Crudely constructed tests revealed almost complete lack of certain abilities believed to be fundamental to the study of geometry. Special attention given to these abilities resulted in a decided improvement in the work of the group. Since then the author has experimented along these same lines with other classes and in the light of this experi ence it seemed desirable to determine the relation of these specific abilities to general geometrical ability. During the years 1915 17 he conducted an extensive investigation which is reported in the following pages. So far as the author knows, no similar investigation has been carried on in this field. L. V. Stockard and J. Carlton Belll have made A Preliminary Study of the Measurement of Abili ties in Geometry, but it does not cover the ground of this investigation. Suggestions as to methods of procedure and of handling the data have been gathered from the following Thorndike's Mental and Social Measurements, Brown's Mental Measurement, King's Elements of Statistical Methods, Buckingham's Spelling Ability - Its Measurement and Distribution, Stone's Arithmetical Abilities, Some Factors Determining Them Trabue's completion-test Language Scales, and Woody 5 Measurements of Some Achievements in Arithmetic. Book Description
Excerpt from Fourth Annual Conference on Educational Measurements: Held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21, 1917 Tiie fourth annual conference on educational measurements has still continued in part the lines of discussion inaugurated in the three previous conferences relative to the measurement of achievement in certain school subjects. This is particularly true in arithmetic and reading. The two studies on the measurement of arithmetical abilities in Indiana published in 1915 and 1916 by Dr. Melvin E. Haggerty have stimulated a third survey in arithmetic in which twenty-seven towns and cities participated, the complete results of which will soon go to press. A brief report of the study by Dean H. L. Smith given at the conference has been incorporated in this bulletin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
