Book Description
The forward-backward asymmetry parameter ($A_{\rm FB}$) as a function of dilepton invariant mass in $Z / \gamma^* \rightarrow l^+l^-$ ($l$=$e$ or $\mu$) at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV is measured using 2.2 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data in 2011. The uncorrected (raw) $A_{\rm FB}$ and the corrected (unfolded) $A_{\rm FB}$ is performed in a wide mass range between 40 GeV/$c^{2}$ to 1000 GeV/$c^{2}$, and comparative studies and correction techniques with simulation are described in detail. We measure raw $A_{\rm FB}$ for the first time in a large rapidity range of 3 $>

Book Description
We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry (A_fb) in dilepton pair decays of Z bosons produced in ppbar collisions using the full Tevatron dataset. The CDF experiment extracts a value for the effective weak mixing angle parameter sin^{2}\theta^{l}_{eff} of 0.2315 +/- 0.0010 from the A_fb distribution of dimuon events in 9.2 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. From dielectron events in 9.7 fb^{-1} of data, the D0 experiment finds sin^{2}\theta^{l}_{eff} = 0.23106 +/- 0.00053, the world's most precise measurement of sin^{2}\theta^{l}_{eff} from hadron colliders and with light quark couplings.

Book Description
ABSTRACT: This dissertation describes the full details of 2 studies of Z0 bosons performed using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider of proton on proton collisions with center of mass energy of 7TeV. The first study searches for physics beyond the Standard Model by looking for an excess in production of Z0 bosons by examining the Z0pT spectrum. As no excess is found, limits on new physics models are presented as a function of mass and other free parameters. The second study focuses on a precision measurement of the Z0pT distribution, and is compared to theoretical calculations for the purposes of testing high order QCD calculations in addition to probing the predictions of various tunes of the underlying event.

Book Description
We present a precise measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry of Z boson production (A{sub LR}) observed in 1993 data at the SLAC linear collider. The A{sub LR} experiment provides a direct measure of the effective weak mixing angle through the initial state couplings of the electron to the Z. During the 1993 run of the SLC, the SLD detector recorded 49,392 Z events produced by the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized positrons at a center-of-mass energy of 91.26 GeV. A Compton polarimeter measured the luminosity-weighted electron polarization to be (63.4±1.3)%. ALR was measured to be 0.1617±0.0071(stat.)±0.0033(syst.), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be sin 2?{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.2292±0.0009(stat.)±0.0004(syst.). This measurement of A{sub LR} is incompatible at the level of two standard deviations with the value predicted by a fit of several other electroweak measurements to the Standard Model.

Book Description
The thesis presents a measurement of the left-right asymmetry, A[sub LR], n the production cross section of Z Bosons produced by e[sup+]e[sup -] annihilations, using polarized electrons, at a center of mass energy of 91.26 Gev. The data presented was recorded by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider during the 1993 run. The mean luminosity-weighted polarization of the electron beam was[rho][sup lum]= (63.0[+-]1.1)%. Using a sample of 49,392 Z events, we measure A[sub LR] to be 0.1626[+-]0.0071(stat)[+-]0.0030(sys.), which determined the effective weak mixing angle to be sin[sup 2][theta][sub W][sup eff]= 0.2292[+-]0.0009(stat.)[+-]0.0004(sys.). This result differs from that expected by the Standard Model of Particles and Fields by 2.5 standard deviations.

Forward-backward Asymmetries in W and Z Decays

Book Description
The leptons emitted in decays of W and Z bosons produced in pp or anti pp collisions exhibit characteristic asymmetries with respect to the beam direction, as measured in the W or Z center-of-mass. The asymmetries appear in both pp and anti pp collisions. For anti pp collisions they appear to be approximately constant over the whole y range for values of M/.sqrt.s greater than or equal to 0.1. For smaller values of M/.sqrt.s, the asymmetries become more and more washed out in the central region as sea-sea collisions begin to play a larger role in gauge boson formation.

The measurement is made for events with electron-positron mass 66

Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment Discovery Potential for Supersymmetry in Same-charge Di-lepton Events

Book Description
ABSTRACT: Same-charge di-lepton events provide a very clean experimental signature for Supersymmetry (SUSY) search. This work studies the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment search potential for new physics with same-charge, isolated di-leptons accompanied by jets and large missing transverse energy. The results show that CMS sensitivity for new physics at 7 TeV with integrated luminosity 100 pb ... 1 will exceed current Tevatron limits. Muon detection for SUSY discovery in the forward direction is accomplished using cathode strip chambers (CSC). These detectors identify muons, provide a fast muon trigger, and give a precise measurement of the muon trajectory. There are 468 six-plane CSCs in the system. The efficiency of finding muon trigger primitives (muon track segments) was studied using 36 CMS CSCs and cosmic ray muons during the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge (MTCC) exercise conducted by the CMS experiment in 2006. The efficiency of finding 2-dimensional trigger primitives within 6-layer chambers was found to be 99.93 ± 0.03%.

Book Description
The angular distributions of Drell-Yan charged lepton pairs in the vicinity of the Z-boson mass peak probe the underlying QCD dynamics of Z-boson production. This paper presents a measurement of the complete set of angular coefficients A0-7 describing these distributions in the Z-boson Collins-Soper frame. The data analysed correspond to 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV, collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC. The measurements are compared to the most precise fixed-order calculations currently available (O([alpha]2s)) and with theoretical predictions embedded in Monte Carlo generators. The measurements are precise enough to probe QCD corrections beyond the formal accuracy of these calculations and to provide discrimination between different parton-shower models. A significant deviation from the (O([alpha]2s)) predictions is observed for A0 - A2. In conclusion, evidence is found for non-zero A5,6,7, consistent with expectations.
