We present a measurement of the muon charge asymmetry from W boson decays using 0.3 fb−1 of data collected at (square root)s = 1.96 GeV between 2002 and 2004 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} Collider. We compare our findings with expectations from next-to-leading-order calculations performed using the CTEQ6.1M and MRST04 NLO parton distribution functions. Our findings can be used to constrain future parton distribution function fits.

The Large Hadron Collider is a new circular particle accelerator designed to collide bunches of protons at a beam energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. One of the two large general-purpose detectors is the Compact Muon Solenoid. This paper will provide a measurement of the W boson cross section and charge asymmetry in the decay channel W to muon + neutrino over the entire 2010 (35.9 inverse picobarn) dataset, as a means of testing detector performance and of constraining Parton Distribution Functions, as well as testing theoretical predictions in the new energy regime. The cross section and charge asymmetry were measured by first imposing a series of cuts, then using sideband subtraction to remove background process contributions. Systematic and statistical uncertainties were also calculated. The cross section was found to be consistent with theoretical predictions, and the overall charge asymmetry was also found to be consistent with theoretical predictions.

This thesis describes a precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] W + X production at the center of mass energy of s = 7 TeV of colliding protons. The data sample was collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb[-]1 . The measurement was performed in 11 bins of the muon pseudorapidity within [eta] 2.4 range and for two thresholds on its transverse momentum: pT 25 GeV and pT> 35 GeV. Precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry provides an important test for the Standard Model physics. Thanks to the large data sample, containing more than 20 million W [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] [MICRO SIGN][nu] events, statistical precision is greatly improved compared with the previous lepton charge asymmetry results at the LHC. Total absolute uncertainty on the charge asymmetry varies within 0.2% [-] 0.4% in different muon pseudorapidity bins. The result provides significant constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the Bjorken-x range from 0.001 to 0.1.

This thesis describes a measurement of the W boson mass from a fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the muon in W decay. In past measurements this technique was used as a cross-check, however, now presents the best method in terms of systematic uncertainty. We discuss all sources of systematic uncertainty with emphasis on those to which the muon p{sub T} measurement is particularly sensitive, specifically, those associated with modeling the production and decay of W bosons. The data were collected with the CDF II detector between March 2002 and September 2003 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of (191 ± 11) pb−1. We measure the W mass to be (80.316 ± 0.066{sub stat.} ± 0.051{sub syst.}) GeV/c2 = (80.316 ± 0.083) GeV/c2.

We give a detailed description of the measurement of the $W$ boson mass, $M_W$, performed on an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb$^{-1}$, which is based on similar techniques as used for our previous measurement done on an independent data set of 1 fb$^{-1}$ of data. The data were collected using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This data set yields $1.68\times 10^6$ $W\rightarrow e\nu$ candidate events. We measure the mass using the transverse mass, electron transverse momentum, and missing transverse energy distributions. The $M_W$ measurements using the transverse mass and the electron transverse momentum distributions are the most precise of these three and are combined to give $M_W$ = 80.367 $\pm$ 0.013 (stat) $\pm$ 0.022 (syst) GeV = 80.367 $\pm$ 0.026 GeV. When combined with our earlier measurement on 1 fb$^{-1}$ of data, we obtain $M_W$ = 80.375 $\pm$ 0.023 GeV.
