Book Description
The purpose of this paper is to identify the convergence of business and medical education and describe the curricula of MD/MBA (Medical Doctor/Master of Business Administration) programs in the US. The focus of this study is to provide a guide to dual MD/MBA programs for physicians, aspiring physicians, policy makers and healthcare organizations. We studied the curricula of 52 universities offering a joint MD/MBA program. The study measured program structure, duration of the dual degree, geographic spread of universities and the average tuition. No recent study has looked into the essential characteristics of these programs. The top disciplines among the 46 programs include strategy, leadership and financial management. Program duration was between five and six years, with an average of 46 semester hours per degree. The average cost of the MD/MBA degree in addition to medical school was $35,810. Geographically, the majority of MD/MBA programs are located in the Northeastern US (33.9%), followed by the South (28.6%), the Midwest (23.21%) and the West (12.5%). Beyond Residency

Beyond Residency PDF Author: William L. Doss
Publisher: East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehab
ISBN: 9781469633985
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Beyond Residency offers practical, no-nonsense advice about the business and economics of being a medical doctor. Used as a textbook in the Business of Medicine Course at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine, this edition is designed to work more broadly for other institutions teaching business of medicine courses and for new physicians starting out in practice. Recalling his days in medical school, Marc Lyles, senior director of health care affairs for the Association of American Medical Colleges said, "Whenever we asked a business question we were always told, 'Don't worry about that. You need to learn the medical side before you worry about the business side.'" He states that between 2003 and 2007, the majority of students were satisfied with their medical and clinical training. However, less than half felt that enough time was devoted to the practice of medicine, especially to medical economics. The Brody School of Medicine addresses that discrepancy, offering its Business of Medicine Course as a fourth-year elective and as a postgraduate class for students in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Topics addressed include time value of money, contracts, RVUs, disability and life insurance, and investment plans such as traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs. In 2015, the Business of Medicine Course received a positive score of 4.68/5 (94%) for its value to medical students, and Beyond Residency received a score of 3.89/4 (97%) for its effectiveness in teaching students the business of medicine. Beyond Residency helps students to understand important yet under-explored areas that will impact them as practicing physicians.

Book Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated burnout for clinicians and administrators alike, heightening the need for this practical guide that provides a comprehensive approach to empowering physicians while ensuring organizational resilience. In this second edition of Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine, doctors Paul DeChant and Diane Shannon define burnout, explore the consequences for physicians, patients, and the health care system, identify the underlying causes that are fueling the burnout epidemic, and provide case studies with specific interventions that have demonstrated success in healing the broken clinical workplace.Based on their experience and extensive interviews with experts in burnout, health care, and Lean management, they give voice to patient advocates, burnout researchers, leaders of health care organizations, and the physicians themselves. DeChant and Shannon also share examples of strategies that hospitals and physician practices across the United States are using to address the root causes of burnout among physicians, including action items for preventing burnout and curbing the crisis."It is hard to see how we can create the health care system we want and need on the backs of joyless and unengaged doctors. This well-written, practical book offers the prescription we need to address this crisis." Robert Wachter, MD, author of The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine's Computer Age
