Book Description
This is my life story. It's a brutally honest description of my childhood, which was scarred with horrific physical and sexual abuse by my parents, priests, probation officers and others who were my authority figures in the LA County Probation System. I was incarcerated throughout my teenage life - from 12-17, never seeing the outside world. This was from 1977-1982. I was emancipated to the streets in 1982, and landed in the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic when there was no name for this disease, I watched 30 of my fellow hustlers die of a disease that had no name before I turned 18. I was lucky to get off the streets because I had a musical talent that enabled me to play with many famous recording artists of the time: Billy Preston, Neil Young, Dan Hartman, James Ingram and many others. I cried while many dying men breathed their last breaths, eventually becoming an aid to hundreds of now deceased AIDS victims. I also performed in Adult Films in the 1980s and was a top nude model throughout the decade, my pictures gracing the covers and centerfolds of many pornographic publications. In those days, we we could live separate lives. Today, we tell the truth or the internet tells it for us. My son and I googled my name Shawn Mayotte in 2006 and we were stunned at how my popularity as a model was worldwide. This is the true story of a survivor.

Narcissism and Its Discontents

Narcissism and Its Discontents PDF Author: Glen O. Gabbard, M.D.
Publisher: American Psychiatric Pub
ISBN: 1615371273
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
The definition of narcissism can be a moving target. Is it an excess of self-love? Profound insecurity? Low self-esteem? Too much self-esteem? Because of the multifaceted nature of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), treating this disorder presents clinicians with a range of wholly unique challenges. Narcissism and Its Discontents recognizes the variable nature of NPD and provides a template for adjusting treatment to the patient rather than shoehorning the patient into a manualized treatment that may prove to be less effectual. This guide offers clinicians strategies, including transference and countertransference, to deal with the complex situations that often arise when treating narcissistic patients, among them, patient entitlement, disengagement, and envy. The authors provide a skillful integration of research and psychoanalytic theory while also addressing psychotherapeutic strategies that are less intensive but also useful-being cognizant of the fact that a majority of patients do not have access to psychoanalysis proper. A chapter on the cultural aspects of narcissism addresses the recent societal fascination with NPD in the discourse on politics and celebrity, particularly in the age of social media. Regardless of the treatment setting-psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, partial hospital, or inpatient--clinicians will find a wealth of approaches to treating a diverse and challenging patient population in Narcissism and Its Discontents.

It's Been A Business Doing Pleasure With You

It's Been A Business Doing Pleasure With You PDF Author: Jeff Snyder
Publisher: Gatekeeper Press
ISBN: 1619844362
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 245

Book Description
IT'S BEEN A BUSINESS DOING PLEASURE WITH YOU is my autobiography of being a high profile gay escort, from early military upbringing and its clashes with my young gay identity, to tales of leaving home under threat of shotgun. Going out into the world I made my way to find a niche of survival, only to discover soon afterwards that I had something far harder to survive, a virus called HIV. With the lost lives of friends, lovers, and dogs, I met many in my Hollywood movie like life, famous and not so famous. In my pursuit of happiness I often found myself as shaman to many souls, some lost. Sometimes sex was the last thing required, instead many needed to be held or touched, and to be reassured of their humanity. This was not lost to me, I embraced it, as kindness was healing. Rounding out my years in the oldest profession are some bits of wisdom, folly, and finally closure with my father after years of distance with his gay son.

Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252090004
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
This thought-provoking cultural history explores how psychoanalytic theories shaped the works of important African American literary figures. Badia Sahar Ahad details how Nella Larsen, Richard Wright, Jean Toomer, Ralph Ellison, Adrienne Kennedy, and Danzy Senna employed psychoanalytic terms and conceptual models to challenge notions of race and racism in twentieth-century America. Freud Upside Down explores the relationship between these authors and intellectuals and the psychoanalytic movement emerging in the United States over the course of the twentieth century. Examining how psychoanalysis has functioned as a cultural phenomenon within African American literary intellectual communities since the 1920s, Ahad lays out the historiography of the intersections between African American literature and psychoanalysis and considers the creative approaches of African American writers to psychological thought in their work and their personal lives.

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 263

Book Description
Written in a lively and accessible style, Antiquity Now opens our gaze to the myriad uses and abuses of classical antiquity in contemporary fiction, film, comics, drama, television - and even internet forums. With every chapter focusing on a different aspect of classical reception - including sexuality, politics, gender and ethnicity - this book explores the ideological motivations behind contemporary American allusions to the classical world. Ultimately, this kaleidoscope of receptions - from calls for marriage equality to examinations of gang violence to passionate pleas for peace (or war) - reveals a 'classical antiquity' that reconfigures itself daily, as modernity explains itself to itself through ever-expanding technologies and media. Antiquity Now thus examines the often-surprising redeployment of the art and literature of the ancient world, a geography charged with especial value in the contemporary imagination.

Damn Shame

Damn Shame PDF Author: David Pevsner
Publisher: Random House Canada
ISBN: 1039000517
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
A funny, daring, bawdy and incredibly honest memoir from the anti-ageist, anti-body shaming, pro-sex advocate and erotic provocateur. Over the course of his 40-year career in show business, David Pevsner has done it all. He’s acted on Broadway, off-Broadway, in independent films and on numerous TV network shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and Criminal Minds. As he continues his career in entertainment, Pevsner has also dedicated himself to exploring his deepest sexual fantasies. In his late 30s he became a mature male escort and over the last several years has attracted a large international fan base through his blog of erotic photographs celebrating nudity and sexuality. Damn Shame is David Pevsner’s incredible story and is a passionate and poignant look at one man’s journey from a thin, shy boy ashamed of his body and sexuality to a defiant, fearless everyman exploring his erotic desires, everything from leather and S&M to nude/erotic/hardcore modelling. Along the way, he fights back against society’s demonization of gay sex, body shaming and ageism while pursuing his own very personal definition of success and seeking love, validation and self-esteem. Damn Shame gives a loud and powerful voice to a generation of mature men who have been conditioned to believe from society (and especially younger members of the gay community) that they are sexually irrelevant, old and undesirable. Pevsner’s life story goes in directions that many couldn’t imagine, but the lessons learned through his experiences will resonate with readers of every age.
