Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Maya Hieroglyphs To the second of these considerations, however, the writings of Mr. C. P. Bowditch, of Boston, Massachusetts, offer a conspicuous exception, particularly his final contribution to this subject, entitled The N umeration, Calendar Systems, and Astronomical Knowledge of the Mayas, the publication of which in 1910 marked the dawn of a new era in the study of the Maya hieroglyphic writing. In this work Mr. Bowditch exhaustively summarizes all previous knowledge of the subject, and also indicates the most promising lines for future investigation. The book is a vast storehouse of heretofore scattered material, now gathered together for the first time and presented to the student in a readily accessible form. Indeed, so thorough is its treatment, the result of many years of intensive study, that the writer would have hesitated to bring out another work, necessarily covering much of the same ground, had it not been for his belief that Mr. Bowditch's book is too advanced for, lay comprehension. The Maya hieroglyphic writing is exceedingly intricate; its subject matter is complex and its forms irregular; and in order to be understood it must be presented in a very elementary way. The writer believes that this primer method of treatment has not been followed in the publi cation in question and, furthermore, that the omission of specimen texts, which would give the student practice in deciphering the glyphs, renders it too technical for use by the beginner. Acknowledgment should be made here to Mr. Bowditch for his courtesy in permitting the reproduction of a number of drawings from his book, the examples of the period, day and month glyphs figured being derived almost entirely from this source; and in a larger sense for his share in the establishment of instruction in this field of research at Harvard University where the writer first took up these studies. In the limited space available it would have been impossible to present a detailed picture of the Maya civilization, nor indeed is this essential to the purpose of the book. It has been thought advisable, however, to precede the general discussion of the hieroglyphs with a brief review of the habitat, history, customs, government, and religion of the ancient Maya, so that the reader mav gather a general idea of the remarkable people whose writing and calendar he is about to study. Excerpt from Day Symbols of the Maya Year The symbol of this day, which is quite uniform in the day series of the codices, is shown in plate LXIV,1.1 In this the essential features appear to be the black spot at the top, the semicircle of dots around it, and the short perpendicular lines in the lower half. The form on the right slab of the Palenque tablet, and also in the Lorillard City inscription, copied by Charney, is given in plate LXIV, 2. The only particular in which this differs from the other is that the little circle at the top is crosshatched. The form shown in Lxrv, 3, is found in the Tikal inscription; it shows also the crosshatching in the little circle at the top. This character, however, when combined with other glyphs, and when used otherwise than as a day symbol, sometimes varies from the types given. For example, in the symbol of the month Mac it is as Shown in plate LXIV, 4. In this a minute, divided oblong, takes the place of the dark spot at the top, and a double curved line accompanies the circle of dots. Another form is shown in plate LXIV, 5. The only variation in this from the usual type is the introduction of two or three minute circles in the curved line of dots and the divided oblong. Dr Seler is inclined to believe that these are essential variants from the true imix symbol; nevertheless, as m is the chief consonant element both in imiw, _or mono and mac, there appears to be a relation between the form of the glyphs and their phonetic value. Excerpt from Animal Figures in the Maya Codices We have not limited ourselves entirely to the Maya manu scripts as we have drawn upon the vast amount of material available in the stone carvings, the stucco figures, and the frescoes found throughout the Maya area. This material has by no means been exhausted in the present paper. In addi tion to the figures from the Maya codices and a comparatively few from other sources in the Maya region, we have introduced for comparison in a number of cases figures from a few of the ancient manuscripts of the N ahuas and the Zapotecs to the north. The calendar of these two peoples is fundamentally the same as that of the Mayas. The year is made up in the same way being composed of eighteen months of twenty days each with five days additional at the end of the year. There is therefore a more or less close connection as regards subject matter in all the pre-columbian codices of Mexico and Central America but the manner of presentation differs among the differ ent peeples of this region. The first or top days of the columns, commencing with III Cib (or 3 may therefore be selected. It is necessary now to give the names of the months and the numbers attached to them exactly in the order in which they stand on the plates, placing over them the corresponding first days of the columns above (see table The counters or intervals are also added below. It is to be understood that the counter below a column indicates the interval between the day over the preceding column and the day over the column under which it is found. For example, 4 (months) and 10 (days) un der the second column of plate 46 indicate the interval between 3 Cib, first column, and 2 Cimi, second column. In this table the portions of the series found on a plate are given together, with the plate number over them, as plate plate etc. The upper cross line of each plate is the upper line of days of the day columns; the next line below this gives the months and numbers of the days of the month of the first month series. These two upper lines and the two lines at the bottom, consisting Of months and days and forming the counters or intervals, are all that will be used in the explanation which follows. In order that the reader may observe the positions which the symbols corresponding with these names and numbers occupy on the plates, a facsimile of plate 50 is introduced (plate I).
