Book Description
Excerpt from Matrices and Determinoids, Vol. 2 HE author's chief aim in writing this book was to give a systematic account of certain applications of matrices, particularly of, rectangular matrices as distinguished from square matrices, and thereby to illustrate the very great advantages gained by using them in almost all branches of Mathematics. It originated in a habit of using matrices freely in, the solu tion of problems in Algebra, Geometry and Applied Mathematics, and is based on the very extensive manuscript acquired in doing so. To give a satisfactory answer to the frequently propounded question 'what is a matrix it seemed advisable to commence with some account of the theory. Accordingly the course of Readership Lectures in which this work was first made public was divided into two halves, the first half dealing with the theory, and the second half with the applications. The theoretical portion has, been constantly increased, in the first place by abstractions from the applications, and in the second place by incorporating the work of other writers. As a consequence the applications have been driven further back, though they still remain the ultimate object of the book. Book Description
Excerpt from Matrices and Determinoids, Vol. 1 If m and n are unequal, either a vertical row contains more elements than a horizontal row, or a horizontal row contains more elements than a vertical row. Those rows, horizontal or vertical, which contain the greater number of elements will be called long rows, and the other rows will be called short rows. The number of long rows is equal to the efficiency of the matrix. In the special case in which m and n are equal the matrix will be called a square matrix. A square matrix has only one order, which is also its efficiency, and in it either set of parallel rows may be regarded as long rows. Matrices and Determiniods: Volume 3

Matrices and Determiniods: Volume 3 PDF Author: C. E. Cullis
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521047609
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 681

Book Description
Originally published in 1925, this book forms part of a three-volume work created to expand upon the content of a series of lectures delivered at the University of Calcutta during the winter of 1909-10. The chief feature of all three volumes is that they deal with rectangular matrices and determinoids as distinguished from square matrices and determinants, the determinoid of a rectangular matrix being related to it in the same way as a determinant is related to a square matrix. An attempt is made to set forth a complete and consistent theory or calculus of rectangular matrices and determinoids. The third volume was originally intended to be divided into two parts, but the second section was never published. The part that made it into print deals chiefly with applications to vector analysis and the theory of invariants.
