Book Description
Fluid and heat flow at temperatures approaching or exceeding that at the critical point (374oC for pure water, higher for saline fluids) may be encountered in deep zones of geothermal systems and above cooling intrusives. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated strong enhancements in heat transfer at near-critical conditions (Dunn and Hardee, 1981). We have developed special numerical techniques for modeling porous flow at near-critical conditions, which can handle the extreme non-linearities in water properties near the critical point. Our numerical experiments show strong enhancements of convective heat transfer at near-critical conditions; however, the heat transfer rates obtained in the numerical simulations are considerably smaller than those seen in the laboratory experiments by Dunn and Hardee. We discuss possible reasons for this discrepancy and develop suggestions for additional laboratory experiments.

Mathematical Models of Convection
Author: Victor K. Andreev
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110258595
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 436
Book Description
Phenomena of convection are abundant in nature as well as in industry. This volume addresses the subject of convection from the point of view of both, theory and application. While the first three chapters provide a refresher on fluid dynamics and heat transfer theory, the rest of the book describes the modern developments in theory. Thus it brings the reader to the "front" of the modern research. This monograph provides the theoretical foundation on a topic relevant to metallurgy, ecology, meteorology, geo-and astrophysics, aerospace industry, chemistry, crystal physics, and many other fields.

Convection in Fluids
Author: Radyadour Kh. Zeytounian
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048124336
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
This monograph, entirely devoted to “Convection in Fluids”, presents a unified rational approach of various convective phenomena in fluids (mainly considered as a thermally perfect gas or an expansible liquid), where the main driving mechanism is the buoyancy force (Archimedean thrust) or temperature-dependent surface tension in homogeneities (Marangoni effect). Also, the general mathematical formulation (for instance, in the Bénard problem - heated from below) and the effect of free surface deformation are taken into account. In the case of atmospheric thermal convection, the Coriolis force and stratification effects are also considered. This volume gives a rational and analytical analysis of the above mentioned physical effects on the basis of the full unsteady Navier-Stokes and Fourier (NS-F) equations - for a Newtonian compressible viscous and heat-conducting fluid - coupled with the associated initials (at initial time), boundary (lower-at the solid plane) and free surface (upper-in contact with ambiant air) conditions. This, obviously, is not an easy but a necessary task if we have in mind a rational modelling process, and work within a numerically coherent simulation on a high speed computer.

Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Nanofluids with and without Boiling and Condensation
Author: Andriy A. Avramenko
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030950816
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 275
Book Description
This book presents step-by-step description of the use of Lie group analysis to find symmetry forms and similarity solutions for single- and two-phase laminar and turbulent flows of nanofluids. It outlines novel and unique analytical solutions validated via comparisons with experimental data. The main part of the book is devoted to analytical modeling of film condensation of still and moving vapor with nanoparticles, stable film boiling of nanofluids, instantaneous unsteady boiling and condensation of nano- and ordinary fluids and clarification and quantification of instability conditions in the vapor layer, as well as centrifugal and Dean instability in nanofluids. It was demonstrated that such complex phenomena can be successfully simulated using the proposed approaches validated via reliable experiments. The book is intended for scientists, engineers, graduate and undergraduate students specializing in the area of engineering thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer and energy systems.

Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Flows
Author: Igor V. Shevchuk
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319209612
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

Introduction to Modeling Convection in Planets and Stars
Author: Gary A. Glatzmaier
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691141738
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
This book provides readers with the skills they need to write computer codes that simulate convection, internal gravity waves, and magnetic field generation in the interiors and atmospheres of rotating planets and stars. Using a teaching method perfected in the classroom, Gary Glatzmaier begins by offering a step-by-step guide on how to design codes for simulating nonlinear time-dependent thermal convection in a two-dimensional box using Fourier expansions in the horizontal direction and finite differences in the vertical direction. He then describes how to implement more efficient and accurate numerical methods and more realistic geometries in two and three dimensions. In the third part of the book, Glatzmaier demonstrates how to incorporate more sophisticated physics, including the effects of magnetic field, density stratification, and rotation. Featuring numerous exercises throughout, this is an ideal textbook for students and an essential resource for researchers. Describes how to create codes that simulate the internal dynamics of planets and stars Builds on basic concepts and simple methods Shows how to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical methods Describes more relevant geometries and boundary conditions Demonstrates how to incorporate more sophisticated physics
