Composite Materials

Composite Materials PDF Author: Krishan K. Chawla
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475739125
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Composite Materials Science and Engineering focuses on the structure-property relationships in composite materials. A detailed description is given of how microstructure of different fibers (such as glass, Kevlar, polyethylene, carbon, boron, silicon, carbide, alumina etc.) controls their characteristics. The important role of interface in composite materials is discussed. Up to date information about the recent advances in polymer matrix-, metal matrix-, and ceramic matrix composites is provided. Micro- and macromechanical aspects of composite materials as well as their strength, fracture, and design aspects are described in detail - always emphasizing the basic theme of how the structure controls the resultant properties. Extensive use is made of micrographs and line drawings to bring home to the reader the importance of structure-property relationships in composites. Throughout the book, examples are given from practical applications of composites in various fields. Extensive references to the literature, general bibliography, as well as practice problems are provided. The book is intended for undergraduates (senior level) and first year graduate students as well as the practicing engineer/scientist in the industry.

IUTAM Symposium on Micromechanics of Plasticity and Damage of Multiphase Materials

IUTAM Symposium on Micromechanics of Plasticity and Damage of Multiphase Materials PDF Author: André Pineau
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400917562
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
The IUT AM Symposium on "Micromechanics of Plasticity and Damage of Multiphase Materials" was held in Sevres, Paris, France, 29 August - 1 September 1995. The Symposium was attended by 83 persons from 18 countries. In addition 17 young French students attended the meeting. During the 4 day meeting, a total of 55 papers were presented, including 24 papers in the poster sessions. The meeting was divided into 7 oral and 3 poster sessions. The 7 oral sessions were the following: - Plasticity and Viscoplasticity I and II; - Phase transformations; - Damage I and II; - Statistical and geometrical aspects; - Cracks and interfaces. Each poster session was introduced by a Rapporteur, as follows: - Session I (Plasticity and Viscoplasticity): G. Cailletaud; - Session 2 (Damage): D. Franc;:ois; - Session 3 (Phase transformation; statistical and geometrical aspects): D. Jeulin. The main purpose of the Symposium was the discussion of the state of the art in the development of micromechanical models used to predict the macroscopic mechanical behaviour of mUltiphase solid materials. These materials consist of at least two chemically different phases, present either initially or formed during plastic deformation, when a strain-induced phase transformation takes place. One session was devoted to the latter case. Continuously strengthened composite materials, containing long fibers, were out of the scope of the Symposium.

Materials and Infrastructures 1

Materials and Infrastructures 1 PDF Author: Jean-Michel Torrenti
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119318572
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
This volume presents the first half of a diverse collection of chapters in the field of materials and infrastructures in transport systems, which illustrate the technological and methodological innovations required to rise to the challenge of building more sustainable transport infrastructures for the future. The authors explore the potential of these sustainable solutions to improve the performance and efficiency of materials and infrastructures, with a reduced environmental impact and lower cost. Theoretical and practical case studies address a variety of topics including circular economy and sustainability, the impacts of climate change, durability, lifecycle, auscultation and the monitoring of infrastructures. This book provides transport researchers and professionals with a better understanding of the current and future trends in these innovative fields, enabling them to put into practice new technologies and methods of design and management, so that new solutions can become current practices to truly improve modern transport systems.

Polypropylene Structure, blends and composites

Polypropylene Structure, blends and composites PDF Author: J. Karger-Kocsis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780412584305
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
Although polypropylene has been marketed since the 1950s, research and development in this area is still vigorous. The consumption of polypropylene over the years has been relatively high, mainly due to the steady improvement of its property profile. Polypropylene: Structures, Blends and Composites, in three separate volumes, reflects on the key factors which have contributed to the success of polypropylene, dealing with all aspects of structure-performance relationships relevant to thermoplastic polymers and related composites. Volume 1, Structure and Morphology, deals with polymorphism in polypropylene homo- and copolymers, where molecular and supermolecular structures are covered, and the processing-induced structure development of polypropylene, showing the interrelation between the processing-induced morphology and mechanical performance. Volume 2, Copolymers and Blends, contains comprehensive surveys of the nucleation and crystallisation behaviour of the related systems. It includes the development of morphology and its effects on rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene-based alloys and blends and a review of polypropylene-based thermoplastic elastomers. Volume 3, Composites, gives a comprehensive overview of filled and reinforced systems with polypropylene as a matrix material, with the main emphasis on processing-structure-property-interrelationships. Chapters cover all aspects of particulate filled, chopped fibre-, fibre mat- and continuous fibre-reinforced composites. Interfacial phenomena, such as adhesion, wetting and interfacial crystallisation, are also included as important aspects of this subject.
