Materials Modelling

Materials Modelling PDF Author: English
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780750301961
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
In Materials Modelling: From Theory to Technology, a distinguished collection of authors has been assembled to celebrate the 60th birthday of Dr. R. Bullough, FRS and honor his contribution to the subject over the past 40 years. The volume explores subjects that have implications in a wide range of technologies, focusing on how basic research can be applied to real problems in science and engineering. Linking theory and technology, the book progresses from the theoretical background to current and future practical applications of modeling. Accessible to a diverse audience, it requires little specialist knowledge beyond a physics degree. The book is useful reading for postgraduates and researchers in condensed matter, nuclear engineering, and physical metallurgy, in addition to workers in R&D laboratories and the high technology industry.

Stability of Materials

Stability of Materials PDF Author: A. Gonis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461303850
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 742

Book Description
Engineering materials with desirable physical and technological properties requires understanding and predictive capability of materials behavior under varying external conditions, such as temperature and pressure. This immediately brings one face to face with the fundamental difficulty of establishing a connection between materials behavior at a microscopic level, where understanding is to be sought, and macroscopic behavior which needs to be predicted. Bridging the corresponding gap in length scales that separates the ends of this spectrum has been a goal intensely pursued by theoretical physicists, experimentalists, and metallurgists alike. Traditionally, the search for methods to bridge the length scale gap and to gain the needed predictive capability of materials properties has been conducted largely on a trial and error basis, guided by the skill of the metallurgist, large volumes of experimental data, and often ad hoc semi phenomenological models. This situation has persisted almost to this day, and it is only recently that significant changes have begun to take place. These changes have been brought about by a number of developments, some of long standing, others of more recent vintage.

Materials Theory, Simulations, and Parallel Algorithms: Volume 408 PDF Author: Efthimios Kaxiras
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 642

Book Description
Significant advances have been made towards understanding the properties of materials through theoretical approaches. These approaches are based either on first-principles quantum mechanical formulations or semi-empirical formulations, and have benefitted from increases in computational power. The advent of parallel computing has propelled the theoretical approaches to a new level of realism in modelling physical systems of interest. The theoretical methods and simulation techniques that are cur- rently under development are certain to become powerful tools in understanding, exploring and predicting the properties of existing and novel materials. This book discusses critically current developments in computations and simulational approaches specifically aimed at addressing real materials problems, with an emphasis on parallel computing and shows the most successful applications of computational and simulational work to date. Topics include: advances in computational methods; parallel algorithms and applications; fracture, brittle/ductile behavior and large-scale defects; thermodynamic stability of materials; surfaces and interfaces of materials; and complex materials simulations.
