First French Composition (Classic Reprint)

First French Composition (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Philip Schuyler Allen

Book Description
Excerpt from First French Composition The story of First French Composition can be told in a few words. We could not find for the teaching of elementary French composition a book that contained enough very simple material. So we made one. One reason, we think, that formal written-work has not been taught earlier, for a longer period, and better in our high schools, is that teachers have realized the book for their purpose did not exist. These words should not be construed to mean that there are not several excellent composition manuals in the field we say merely that in our opinion they do not offer a goodly amount of extremely simple, natural, and concrete material. We shall not be content unless First French Composition is found to be a most practical book for use during the second year of French in secondary schools, even in those which have only a two years' course. It is not graded in the sense that it begins with easy words and phrases and ends with long puzzle-sentences which illustrate every conceivable manner of syntactic difficulty. First French Composition is easy at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. It aims to give the student constant opportunity to write, and write, and write the sort of simple idiomatic French sentence thathe must know before he can work out long problems in philosophical diction. It is practice that makes perfect, and to practise a thing means; to do it over and over again and then yet again. Book Description
Excerpt from French Conversation And Composition This little volume has been prepared with a twofold purpose in mind: to provide material (1) for conversation and (2) for a review in the elementary principles of the grammar. To attempt to stimulate spontaneous conversation, even on simple subjects, without the aid of a French model, not only is hazardous but often becomes aimless, and at best results in the acquisition of a limited vocabulary. Furthermore, it re quires a skilful teacher to adapt to such purposes the substance of a text prepared with a totally different end in view. Book Description
Excerpt from French Prose Composition There is no dearth of French Composition books; indeed, some of those now available are so good that it would be idle to try to improve upon them. This book, therefore, is not designed to supersede any of the works already published, but simply to embody an idea that the author believes to be new in French Composition work, i.e., to teach students to translate live English into live French. The criticism that can be made of some Composition books is that the English offered for translation is artificial; in many cases, indeed, it reads more like a too literal translation of French models into English than like genuine English. This little volume is divided into two parts, the first intended as a preparation for the second. This first or preparatory part has purposely been made easy. The second is composed entirely of excerpts from English or American newspapers and magazines. Wherever it has been found possible, the names of the publications quoted have been given. With a very few exceptions, the texts have been left untouched and where changes have been made, the purpose has been merely to simplify too difficult passages. It may be said at this point that most of the selections included in the second half of the book have been tested in the classroom and found to give satisfaction. In the first lessons use has been made of Mr. Carpenter's excellent geographical reader, "Europe," published by the American Book Company, and thanks are here tendered to him for his permission to do so. Book Description
Excerpt from Selections for French Composition This book was written in response to a general demand for an easy but comprehensive manual that could be used both in colleges and in schools. Its leading characteristic, as compared with similar works, is the nature of the English texts, which though I have tried to make them sufficiently idiomatic - are all so constructed that, when translated, they will be real French, and not English written with French words. Parts I. And II. Follow the imitative method; the others are taken from French sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Materials for French Composition, Vol. 1 These exercises were originally devised for use in the Boston high schools: as they have proved successful there, I venture to make them public. They were composed in the belief that pupils can succeed in writing idiomatic French only through the careful study and imitation of good French models. Any attempt to turn ordinary English into a foreign language, with the help of grammar and dictionary alone, is, except in the case of advanced students, almost an absolute waste of time. Halévy's well-known novel was chosen as a basis for three reasons: it is widely used; it is published in this country (by W. R. Jenkins of New York) ; it is written in a language at once simple and extremely idiomatic. For every one of the thirty-five exercises, I have taken as a model about a page of the Abbe Constantin, and have constructed in English, from the words and phrases it contains, a new conversation or narrative, rendering peculiarly French expressions by corresponding English idioms, and using the single words, as far as possible, in forms and relations different from those they have in the original.
