Introduction to the Theory of Numbers

Introduction to the Theory of Numbers PDF Author: Harold N. Shapiro
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 0486466698
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 482

Book Description
Starting with the fundamentals of number theory, this text advances to an intermediate level. Author Harold N. Shapiro, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at New York University's Courant Institute, addresses this treatment toward advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Selected chapters, sections, and exercises are appropriate for undergraduate courses. The first five chapters focus on the basic material of number theory, employing special problems, some of which are of historical interest. Succeeding chapters explore evolutions from the notion of congruence, examine a variety of applications related to counting problems, and develop the roots of number theory. Two "do-it-yourself" chapters offer readers the chance to carry out small-scale mathematical investigations that involve material covered in previous chapters.

Gauge Theory in Higher Dimensions

Gauge Theory in Higher Dimensions PDF Author: Henrique N Sá Earp
Publisher:
ISBN: 9788524404801
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
This book is an introduction to gauge theory in dimensions greater than . It is organised as a reader's guide to Gang Tian's landmark article Gauge theory and calibrated geometry, I, published in the Annals of Mathematics in 2000. Tian carried out to substantial lengths the programme outlined by Simon Donaldson and Richard Thomas in their seminal paper, by extending the fundamental notion of instanton in Yang-Mills theory to higher dimensional special geometries. Moreover, his bubbling theorem relates instanton compactness to the theory of calibrated submanifolds. This work expresses our admiration for all of these key authors. The text is aimed at graduate students and advanced undergraduates, as well as specialists in other areas of Mathematics and Physics, with an interest in modern Differential Geometry. We adopt a fast-paced but self-contained exposition of the background on connections and curvature on bundles, special geometric structures, analysis on manifolds and geometric measure theory, alongside the proof of Tian's bubbling theorem. We also highlight some links with other important works in contemporary Geometry and Topology. This version was commissioned as supporting material to an advanced course by the authors at the 32 Brazilian Colloquium of Mathematics, hosted by the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) from July 29th to August 2nd, 2019.We hope that the reader will share in our enthusiasm for this beautiful and fast-evolving subject.

Distance Learning, E-Learning and Blended Learning in Mathematics Education

Distance Learning, E-Learning and Blended Learning in Mathematics Education PDF Author: Jason Silverman
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319907905
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
This book builds on current and emerging research in distance learning, e-learning and blended learning. Specifically, it tests the boundaries of what is known by examining and discussing recent research and development in teaching and learning based on these modalities, with a focus on lifelong mathematics learning and teaching. The book is organized in four sections: The first section focuses on the incorporation of new technologies into mathematics classrooms through the construction or use of digital teaching and learning platforms. The second section presents a wide range of perspectives on the study and implementation of different tutoring systems and/or computer assisted math instruction. The third section presents four new innovations in mathematics learning and/or mathematics teacher education that involve the development of novel interfaces’ for communicating mathematical ideas and analyzing student thinking and student work. Finally, the fourth section presents the latest work on the construction and implementation of new MOOCs and rich media platforms developed to carry out specialized mathematics teacher education.

Great Moments in Mathematics Before 1650

Great Moments in Mathematics Before 1650 PDF Author: Howard Eves
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1614442142
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Great Moments in Mathematics: Before 1650 is the product of a series of lectures on the history of mathematics given by Howard Eves. He presents here, in chronological order, 20 ``great moments in mathematics before 1650'', which can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys mathematics. These wonderful lectures could be used as the basis of a course on the history of mathematics but can also serve as enrichment to any mathematics course. Included are lectures on the Pythagorean Theorem, Euclid's Elements, Archimedes (on the sphere), Diophantus, Omar Khayyam, and Fibonacci.

Theory of Difference Equations Numerical Methods and Applications by V Lakshmikantham and D Trigiante

Theory of Difference Equations Numerical Methods and Applications by V Lakshmikantham and D Trigiante PDF Author: Lakshmikantham
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080958699
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering
