Masters of the Grotesque

Masters of the Grotesque PDF Author: Schuy R. Weishaar
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476600600
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
The concepts and theories surrounding the aesthetic category of the grotesque are explored in this book by pursuing their employment in the films of American auteurs Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, the Coen Brothers and David Lynch. The author argues that interpreting these directors' films through the lens of the grotesque allows us1to situate both the auteurs and the films within a long history of the grotesque in art and aesthetics. This cultural tradition effectively subsumes the contribution of any artist or1genre that intersects it but also affords the artist or genre--the auteur and the genre filmmaker--a pantheon and an abundance of images, themes, and motifs through which he1or she can subversively represent the world and our place in it.

Book Description
The Early Modern Grotesque: English Sources and Documents 1500-1700 offers readers a large and fully annotated collection of primary source texts addressing the grotesque in the English Renaissance. The sources are arranged chronologically in 120 numbered items with accompanying explanatory Notes. Each Note provides clarification of difficult terms in the source text, locating it in the context of early modern English and Continental discourses on the grotesque. The Notes also direct readers to further English sources and relevant modern scholarship. This volume includes a detailed introduction surveying the vocabulary, form and meaning of the grotesque from its arrival as a word, concept and aesthetic in 16th century England to its early maturity in the 18th century. The Introduction, Items and Notes, complemented by illustrations and a comprehensive bibliography, provide an unprecedented view of the evolving complexity and diversity of the early modern English grotesque. While giving due credit to Wolfgang Kayser and Mikhail Bakhtin as masters of grotesque theory, this ground-breaking book aims to provoke new, evidence-based approaches to understanding the specifically English grotesque. The textual archive from 1500-1700 is a rich and intriguing record that offers much to interested readers and researchers in the fields of literary studies, theatre studies and art history.

Book Description
These three essential volumes on classical music theory and history explore the lives and contributions of some of music’s greatest minds. In Legend of a Musical City: The Story of Vienna, renowned Austrian music critic Max Graf shares his recollections of life with Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Arnold Schoenberg, and other immortals of the music world. Bringing to life several iconic composers as well as the city of Vienna itself, Graf recounts a charming, personal, and highly educational story of Austria’s musical legacy. In Schoenberg and His School, noted composer, conductor, and music theorist René Leibowitz offers an authoritative analysis of Schoenberg’s groundbreaking contributions to composition theory and Western polyphony. In addition to detailing his subject’s major works, Leibowitz also explores Schoenberg’s impact on the works of his two great disciples, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. In Shostakovich: The Man and His Work, Ivan Martynov presents a compelling and intimate biography of this pioneering legend. Martynov draws on extensive research, including interviews and conversations with Shostakovich himself, as well as his own expertise in the field of musicology.

Sanctum Sanctorum

Sanctum Sanctorum PDF Author: Justin Mandela Roberts
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532656920
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 183

Book Description
This book seeks to answer the question, "What is holiness?" What do we talk about when we talk about holiness? We might describe many things as holy, but as Socrates says, what is "the essential aspect, by which all holy acts are holy?" Sanctum Sanctorum gives an account of the holy from within the Christian participatory tradition, and argues that holiness is included in a special category of divine names that Christian metaphysics calls "transcendentals" (which are five: being, one, truth, goodness, and beauty). Moreover, holiness stands in a hierarchical relationship to the other five transcendentals, as the culmination or concentration of the rest. Only by understanding holiness as the "head" of the transcendentals, as "the" transcendental, can one account for all the complexity the idea of the holy conjures. Therefore, holiness is the transcendental of the transcendentals. It adds the aspect of reverence to existence and, as such, it is constituted by the formula sanctum sanctorum (Holy-of-holies) which extends from the divine nature through the triune life to all creation.

Infernal Grotesque

Infernal Grotesque PDF Author: Gianfranco Sodoma
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781840686814
Category : Art, Baroque
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The three centuries from 1400 to 1700 saw not only a great rebirth of European art, but also a religious mania centred on fears of Hell, damnation, and witchcraft -- the latter igniting Europe's great witch persecutions, a blood-crazed holocaust against women. The combination of classical painting and the war against Satanic forces produced some of the most astonishing images in the history of art: landscapes of Hell populated by demons, twisted monsters and the bloody tortures of the damned; saints tormented by infernal visions of devils, sin and the corruption of the flesh; witches' sabbats of baby-eating, corpse resurrection and bestial fornication; and, finally, grim evocations of death, scattered with skulls, as a warning against earthly avarice and pride. Infernal Grotesque collects over 120 of these images from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, steeped in beautiful horror, swirling with bizarre and hallucinatory nightmare. The artists featured include Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Breugel, Pieter Huys, Jan Mandyn, Jacob von Swanenburg, Herri Met de Bles, Hans Memling, Jacopo Ligozzi, Peter Paul Rubens, Salvator Rosa, Frans Francken, Frans Floris and Lucas Cranach, as well as numerous others. Illuminated Masters is a new series of high-quality art books featuring the work of classical artists from the 15th to 17th centuries.
