Thirty Sterling Songs by the Great Masters (Classic Reprint)

Thirty Sterling Songs by the Great Masters (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Henry T. Finck
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
Excerpt from Thirty Sterling Songs by the Great Masters IT is an American trait to insist on having the best of everything, and only the best. In music we patronize the world's leading opera singers, pianists, and violinists at any cost, while the minor artists find it more profitable to remain in Europe. One branch of the divine art presents an unfortunate exception. Our school music is for the most part far from being the best of its kind. In the literature classes in our schools the students are introduced directly to Shakespeare, Milton, Tennyson, Ruskin, and the other great masters of style and thought, to the students' immense advantage. But the music books are, for the most part, filled with inferior songs and second-hand arrangements, apparently on the erroneous assumption that the best songs of the great masters are too difficult to sing or understand, when they are, in truth, often as simple as folk-tunes, and much more likely than inferior productions to make an immediate and deep impression. The aim of the T/u'rzjy Sterling Song: is to do for music what has already been done for literature, by bringing the students into direct 'contact with nearly a dozen of the greatest song writers, representing seven different countries, - Germany, Austria, Hungary, Russia, Poland, Norway, and America. As the time allowed for music in our secondary schools is more limited than it ought to be in view of the importance of this art as a healthful recreation and refining influence, it is obvious that the quality of the music supplied is of infinitely more consequence than the quantity. It has, therefore, been decided, after due deliberation, to limit the number of songs in this collection to thirty, but to make sure that each of them is a work of genius, - every bar a bar of gold. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint)

Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. A New English Music

A New English Music PDF Author: Tim Rayborn
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476624941
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
The turn of the 20th century was a time of great change in Britain. The empire saw its global influence waning and its traditional social structures challenged. There was a growing weariness of industrialism and a desire to rediscover tradition and the roots of English heritage. A new interest in English folk song and dance inspired art music, which many believed was seeing a renaissance after a period of stagnation since the 18th century. This book focuses on the lives of seven composers--Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Ernest Moeran, George Butterworth, Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock), Gerald Finzi and Percy Grainger--whose work was influenced by folk songs and early music. Each chapter provides an historical background and tells the fascinating story of a musical life.

Book Description
Excerpt from The English Graduate Record, Vol. 1: November-December, 1905 Still more numerous and varied are the directions for instrumental music. In Elizabethan times the orchestra played soft music while Bassanio was making his choice of caskets, very much as it does to-day. The passing Oftime between acts was indicated by music. The various directions for Trumpet, Flourish, Tucket, Sen net, Alarum, Short Alarum, and Sound for Re treat are rather confusing. Perhaps it is sufficient to note that such variations exist, most of them intended for the trumpet or cornet. A sennet usually indicated the arrival of a king, and a tucket a call to arms. Horns and trumpets, drums, tabors and pipes, lutes and haut boys, in a word, nearly all the musical instruments com mon to the time were used in the presentation Of these dramas. Book Description
Excerpt from Music in England and Music in America, Vol. 1 The history of musical development in England is to the art student, both highly interesting and instruc tive. How are we to explain why a nation that has reached such pre-eminence in dramatic and lyrical poetry, has occupied rather a subordinate place in its original musical efforts, when compared with the labors Of the Italians, the Germans, the French; and that in the form which is most closely related to the drama, - the Opera, English musicians never have gone far ther than to imitate, with more or less ability and success, the works Of Continental composers? Some Englishmen have been endowed with fine talent, even genius, for music. The English are fond of music, and spend large Sums in the interest of Operatic enter tainments given by the first living artists; and the works of the first masters Of instrumental music find a deserved recognition at the hands of English musical connoisseurs.
