In this memoir, he recalls growing up poor in Spanish Harlem, where he held his own on the mean streets. At nineteen years old, he passed a test to join the U.S. Air Force. Within two weeks, he was a six-year enlistee in the Air Force, choosing to serve his country and pursue his education instead of chasing a career as a professional boxer. He would go on to serve three years in Minot, North Dakota, over a twenty-year period, and also spent time in New York, Montana, the Philippines, Texas, Honduras, Nevada, Panama, and elsewhere. But it was his four tours in South Korea that shaped him and where he learned Hapkido. The more he learned about South Korea, the more he was surprised.
