Book Description
Excerpt from Massey's Garden Book for the Southern States For years past, many readers of The Progressive Farmer have been asking me to prepare a garden book. Therefore, in the intervals of a very busy life, I have prepared this little volume. It is not intended to be a treatise on horticulture, but is simply a little handbook for daily guidance in making the farm garden. I hope it may have some influence in promoting all-the-year-round gardening in the South and aid in abolishing the old-style garden which is surrendered to weeds and dead cornstalks in the fall; and will make it possible instead to have gardens yielding their products without cessation. "Hog and hominy" and black-eye peas are good things, but they do not furnish the healthful variety of food which the garden should enable any farm family to have. A frame and a few glass sashes will furnish plenty of lettuce all winter, and radishes, too, and the open garden should supply spinach, kale, leeks, parsnips, salsify, carrots, cabbages and collards (the latter buried where they grew). These, with the stored onions, potatoes (Irish and sweet) and the canned fruits and vegetables of summer growth, will give the table of the Southern farmer such a bounteous supply of food that he will hardly be able to tell the difference between summer and winter garden. With all these things easily available, there is no need for the Southern farmer to live all winter on salt pork and bacon, corn bread and black-eye peas. So, here's for an "all-the-year-garden." Book Description
Excerpt from The Blossom Circle of the Year in Southern Gardens The women of all the South are now thoroughly awakened to their responsibility and opportunity, not only in the matter of conservation, but also in that of education and of the development of the garden and landscape work of both the cities and the rural districts. These women are planting their school grounds and courthouse squares, municipal parks, and railroad stations; they are organizing garden clubs; they are working for a development, along artistic lines, of the new highways that con nect the states, and they are endeavoring to develop the farms until they become estates worthy of this or any other section. The wonderful and varied flora of the Southern States offers but, one problem for garden makers - that of choice. There is absolutely no limit to the list of offerings that will grow and thrive all over this prolific land. Book Description
Excerpt from Gardening in the South IS book owes its being to the fact that up to the present time literature dealing with the planting of home grounds in the middle and upper South has not been obtainable. Nothing specific has been written to help the Southern home owner solve the problems connected with the planting and maintenance of beautiful grounds. It is true that a book on gardening appeared which dealt entirely with plants and conditions encountered along the Southern coastal country and the State of Florida, this section having an almost entirely different flora from the middle and upper South. Book Description
Excerpt from Richard Frotscher's Almanac and Garden Manual for the Southern States, 1887: Designed to Give Directions for the Cultivation of Vegetables, as Practiced in the South My arrangements with my growers are made so that I receive the new crop, expressly cleaned for me, as soon as it is matured. The varieties which are not raised in the North, I order from Europe, and have them shipped so as to reach me about the beginning of August, just the time they are needed for fall planting. By following this plan I have always a full supply of fresh seeds of undoubted germi nating qualities, while dealers, who sell on commission, have only those left from the winter previous.
