Within the context of U.S.-Indian law, federal acknowledgment establishes a trust relationship between an Indian tribe and the U.S. government. Gambling with Culture
Author: Martha Ann Bird
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Gambling on Indian reservations
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
Focuses on four "moments" in the Mashantucket Pequot tribe's history, including (1) the Pequot War of 1637; (2) life on the reservation from the 1660s to the present; (3) Casino gambling at Mashantucket and Indian/White land-claim disputes concomitant with it; and (4) the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center and the consolidation and display of the tribe's symbolic capital. Through these historical moments, the project examines two key analytic themes: the creative variability of contemporary uses of the past and their susceptibility to contradiction; and the practiced negotiations over the issues of land and identity resulting from a set of competing ideas about history. Through a close reading of the spaces and times that have shaped Mashantucket Pequot history, the study highlights the role that the past plays for contemporary social actors struggling to make sense of the world around them.
