Intimate partner violence (IPV) is considered to be a pervasive and devastating social issue and is disproportionately perpetrated by men (CDC). Masculinity ideologies, which are comprised of male role norm expectations, inform boys and men about what it means to be and to not be "a man" and have been established as a predictive factor of men's IPV perpetration. These ideologies serve to maintain existing social hierarchies that entitle men to seek socially dominant and powerful positions in society, as well as within their intimate relationships. Further, masculinity is considered to be unstable, subject to threat, and in need of defense, often through physical violence. The unstable nature of masculinity has not been thoroughly studied as a predictive factor in men's IPV perpetration. In this dissertation, a mediational analysis, where the relationship between precarious manhood beliefs (PMB), masculine gender role stress (MGRSS), masculinity ideology adherence, and the frequency of IPV perpetration and coercive controlling behaviors are examined in a sample of men with a history of abuse, who are currently enrolled in area batterer intervention programs (BIPs). Further, the variable of men's desire for additional relationship power is examined as a mediating mechanism through which both PMB and MGRSS lead to IPV perpetration and coercive controlling behaviors. Findings reveal that PMB and masculinity ideologies are significantly predictive of men's frequency of IPV perpetration and coercive controlling behaviors. Further, desire for additional relationship power (DARP) is found to fully mediate the relationship between masculinity ideologies and the frequency of IPV perpetration and coercive controlling behaviors. Implications of the present research include applying the findings of the present study toward informing the inclusion of masculinity ideologies within BIP curricula and expanding theoretical knowledge surrounding the roles of masculinity instability, masculinity ideologies, and relationship power as they predict IPV perpetration among men with a history of violence.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a global public health issue and human rights crisis. Preventative interventions focused on perpetrators of IPV are still under-researched, and empirically-based interventions to address the global health crisis of gender-based violence are needed. This study proposes a 12-week gender-focused art intervention program as a solution to reduce IPV perpetration. This intervention is proposed to reduce masculine discrepancy stress (MDS), a predictor of IPV perpetration in boys aged nine to ten years, and thus decrease the likelihood of IPV perpetration in adolescence. Additionally, this study serves as a preliminary analysis of the constructs mediating the relationship between MDS and IPV. By comparing the intervention condition, recess condition, and control condition, six research questions will be investigated: (1) Do boys as young as nine or ten experience MDS? (2) Does Vilkin et al.'s (2020) gender-focused art program serve as an effective intervention in reducing MDS? (3) Can school-based gender-expansive interventions reduce the likelihood IPV perpetration? (4) Is there a social spillover effect of gender-expansive intervention on boys who are in the recess condition? (5) Does Vilkin et al.'s (2020) gender-focused art program reduce MDS and IPV-related factors through social and emotional learning? (6) Lastly, what is the relationship between MDS and IPV-related factors, specifically impulsivity and emotional regulation? My proposed study will add to the burgeoning research supporting MDS as a viable construct to target for IPV intervention. My study will offer a path to a potential solution to the public health crisis of IPV in the United States and contribute to the understanding of primary IPV prevention globally.

Current research has established links between endorsement of traditional male role norms and perpetration of intimate partner violence. However, research has not identified the cognitive and affective pathways that link masculinity ideology and beliefs about intimate partner violence. The current study examined fear of intimacy, ambivalent sexism, and relationship dominance as potential mediating factors of the relationship between masculinity ideology and acceptance of myths about partner violence in a community sample of 101 American men. Multiple regression analyses indicated that, while sexism and dominance did partially mediate the proposed relationship, fear of intimacy did not. Research and clinical implications are discussed. .
