A Time to Risk All

A Time to Risk All PDF Author: Clodagh Finn
Publisher: Gill & Macmillan Ltd
ISBN: 071717560X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
Clodagh Finn has travelled throughout Europe to piece together the story of this remarkable, unknown Irish woman, meeting many of those children Mary Elmes saved. Here, in a book packed with courage, heroism, adventure and tragedy, her story is finally remembered. The children called her 'Miss Mary', and they remember her kindness still. She gave them food and shelter and later risked her life to help them escape the convoys bound for Auschwitz. Turning her back on a brilliant academic career, Mary Elmes ventured into a war zone to help children in the Spanish Civil War. In 1939, she fled Franco's forces but continued to work with refugees in France when the Second World War broke out. In 1942, when it became evident that Jews were being deported to their deaths, she smuggled children to safety in the boot of her car. She was arrested and imprisoned by the Gestapo, but went straight back to work after her release. When the war was over, Mary married and settled down, never speaking about what she had done. Her story was forgotten. In A Time to Risk All her remarkable story is finally remembered as it should be. 'A compelling portrait of an unsung Irish heroine of two wars' Madeleine Keane, Literary Editor, Sunday Independent 'Brings to light the life of Mary Elmes, showing a remarkable, independent and courageous woman whose compassion knew no borders.' The Extraordinary Story of Mary Elmes

The Extraordinary Story of Mary Elmes PDF Author: Paddy Butler
Publisher: Orpen Press
ISBN: 1786050455
Category : Young Adult Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
Mary Elmes is the great unsung heroine of modern Ireland. Risking her life to save Jewish children during the Holocaust, she turned her back on a promising academic career to help others. She is the only Irish person to be honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Israel for this work. In 1937 she travelled to Spain as an aid worker, where she ran children’s hospitals, moving from one bombed-out building to the next in the midst of a horrific civil war. Moving to France after Franco’s victory, she continued to work in the wretched refugee camps hastily thrown together by the French authorities for 500,000 escaping Spanish Republicans. Soon, Jews fleeing the Nazis were also imprisoned in the internment camps. Mary initially sought to relieve the suffering of all the inmates but when the deportations to the east began she worked to save hundreds of Jewish children from the death camps, going so far as to smuggle children out of the camp in her own car. Eventually her actions came to the notice of the collaborationist Vichy government and in 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and jailed for six months. The Extraordinary Story of Mary Elmes tells the gripping story of one woman’s heroism during two of the twentieth century’s bloodiest conflicts. It includes a number of interviews with some of those who owe their lives to Mary Elmes, as well as photographs and a wealth of archival material.

Category : History

Pages : 474

Book Description
Warrior Queens & Quiet Revolutionaries is a celebration of unheard and under-heard women’s history. 'Excellent . . . bursting with extraordinary women' – Anita Anand 'Brilliant' – Daisy Buchanan “My hope is that this book will inspire as I have been inspired. It’s a love letter to the importance of history and about how, without knowing where we come from - truthfully and entirely - we cannot know who we are.” Within these pages you’ll meet nearly 1000 women whose names deserve to be better known: from the Mothers of Invention and the trailblazing women at the Bar; warrior queens and pirate commanders; the women who dedicated their lives to the natural world or to medicine; those women of courage who resisted and fought for what they believed; to the unsung heroes of stage, screen and stadium. It is global, travelling the world and spanning all periods of time. It is also an intensely moving detective story of the author’s own family history as Kate Mosse pieces together the forgotten life of her great-grandmother, Lily Watson, a famous and highly-successful novelist in her day who has all but disappeared from the record . . . Warrior Queens & Quiet Revolutionaries is accessible and fascinating in its detail. A beautifully illustrated dictionary of women, it is a love letter to family history and a personal memoir about the nature of women’s struggles to be heard and their achievements acknowledged. Joyous, celebratory and engaging, it is a book for everyone who has ever wondered how history is made. 'A must have for history lovers and feminists' – Glamour

No Way Out

No Way Out PDF Author: Isadore Ryan
Publisher: Mercier Press Ltd
ISBN: 1781174881
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
The experiences of the Irish in France during the war were overshadowed by the threat of internment or destitution. Up to 2,000 Irish people were stuck in occupied France after the defeat by Nazi Germany in June 1940. This population consisted largely of governesses and members of religious orders, but also the likes of Samuel Beckett, as well as a few individuals who managed to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up in internment camps (or worse). The book examines the engagement of the Irish in various forms of resistance. It also reveals that the attitude of some of the Irish towards the German occupiers was not always as clear-cut as politically correct discourse would like to suggest. There are fascinating revelations, most notably that Ireland’s diplomatic representative in Paris sold quantities of wine to Hermann Göring; that Irish passports were given out very liberally (including to a convicted British rapist); that, in the early part of the war, some Irish ended up in internment camps in France and, through the slowness of the Irish authorities to intervene, were subsequently sent to concentration camps in Germany; and that a couple of Irish people faced criminal proceedings in France after the Liberation because of their wartime dealings with the Germans.

Oust the Dictator

Oust the Dictator PDF Author: Mehr A. Kalami
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1663223424
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
Since millennials, mankind has destroyed and dictated over humankind in the most brutal manner. From total obscurity, the chosen candidate is introduced and promoted by enablers through the International Political Mafia and Global Imperialism and Colonialism. The now powerful dictator is but a puppet of these internationals. Time and often the dictator barely realizes being a servitor of those power-wielders behind the curtain. This applies to Donald J. Trump whose ego and shortcomings made him easily manipulated by those in the Kremlin and other global Mafia bosses. What would be the scenario had Donald J. Trump won the second term in the 2020 presidential elections? Would he begin his term by first suspending the Constitution, declaring martial law, and appointing himself as the Martial Law Administrator? Considering the fact that he played a pivotal role in sending more than fifty thousand rioters to the Capitol Building to riot on his behalf on January 6, 2021 to overturn the presidential election results in his favor through violence and threats. It is easily possible that he could muster nearly five million fanatics and professional agitators to commit wanton acts of violence against those he despises. Perhaps sanity and logic could teach us a lesson to remember and never forget. Ousting the dictator once he is identified; and confronting him or her through non-violence is the only avenue to usher in peace and tranquility.

A Beautiful Pageant

A Beautiful Pageant PDF Author: D. Krasner

ISBN: 1137066253
Category : History

Book Description
The Harlem Renaissance was an unprecedented period of vitality in the American Arts. Defined as the years between 1910 and 1927, it was the time when Harlem came alive with theater, drama, sports, dance and politics. Looking at events as diverse as the prizefight between Jack Johnson and Jim 'White Hope' Jeffries, the choreography of Aida Walker and Ethel Waters, the writing of Zora Neale Hurston and the musicals of the period, Krasner paints a vibrant portrait of those years. This was the time when the residents of northern Manhattan were leading their downtown counterparts at the vanguard of artistic ferment while at the same time playing a pivotal role in the evolution of Black nationalism. This is a thrilling piece of work by an author who has been working towards this major opus for years now. It will become a classic that will stay on the American history and theater shelves for years to come.
