Hair is a major component of the body's tissue system that contributes to the individual's make up and confers a large degree of personal identity. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently.
