Marriage Proposals

Marriage Proposals PDF Author: Anita Bernstein
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814791107
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The essays in Marriage Proposals envision a variety of scenarios in which adults would continue to join themselves together seeking permanent companionship and sustenance, linking sexual intimacy to a long commitment, usually caring for each other, and building new families. What would disappear are the legal consequences associated with marriage. No joint income tax return; no immigration privileges like the “fiancée visa” or the right to bring in a husband or wife; no special statuses for prison visits or hospital decisions; no prerogative to remain silent in court by claiming “confidential marital communications”; no pension entitlements; no marital benefits and detriments regarding criminal or civil liability. The anthology makes a unique contribution amid the two marriage furors of the day: same-sex marriage and the Bush Administration's “marriage movement” (that marrying is good and more marriages would be better for society). Abolishing the legal category of marriage is the only policy suggestion in current American discourse that speaks to both causes. Activists on both sides of the same-sex marriage fight, along with marriage movement partisans, all seek improvement through law reform. Marriage Proposals gives them a viable reform—abolition of marriage as a legal status—for fighting battles in the courtroom and the streets. Contributors include Anita Bernstein, Peggy Cooper Davis, Martha Albertson Fineman, Linda C. McClain, Marshall Miller, Lawrence Rosen, Mary Lyndon Shanley, and Dorian Solot.

Book Description
To some, proposal making is old but I beg to differ. I told ladies in our church never to go into any marriage until a man proposes and they accept or rescind. Wait a minute, do people still propose before they got married in this part of the world? It is common to see women pack their load into men's houses and they call it marriage. When they are tired, they just call it quits. Some believe the act of marital proposal is for certain cultures in the western world. A real man must be bold and romantic enough to look the lady he wants to spend the rest of his life with in the face and say "would you marry me?" Welcome to Marriage 101 - The act of marital Proposal.

ISBN: 1666902519
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 159

Book Description
In the decade spanning 2010–2020, social media showcased growing celebrations of lifetime milestones across multiple platforms. Utilizing theoretical and methodological approaches based in cultural studies, Milestone Celebrations in the Age of Social Media analyzes social media phenomena including gender-reveal parties; promposals; publicized marriage proposals; divorce celebrations; and the rites of the Death Positive Movement. Carly Gieseler illustrates how the public sharing of major life events on social media platforms reshapes the way we communicate about topics including courtship, birth, marriage, divorce, and death. While each trend represents a unique occasion, these celebrations share themes inherent to our human experience in the digital age. Culminating in the wake of the pandemic and its impact on each communal celebration, this book illustrates one of our most vital human drives—connection.

Book Description
Liberty Blair lives in Southern California and is about to write a novel when she learns her daughter, an only child, is missing. After filing a Missing Persons Report, she receives a call from a detective in a town just outside of Las Vegas, asking her to identify the body of a woman recently found in his jurisdiction. Detective John Hatchet has always been known for his backbone and determination. He's also known for having had more than his share of women. On the other hand, Liberty has a few problems of her own, like a bad case of misplaced emotions, sexuality, and lack of direction. This just might hinder Hatchet's resolve in unraveling the mystery. After all he's a detective, not a therapist.
