Book Description
Sudan is one of the largest exporters of sheep in Africa. However, the sheep marketing is still undeveloped due to lack of infrastructures such as extension services, roads and telecommunication, market information system, R&D and logistical supports. One of the major policy instruments that discourage innovations is the imposition of direct taxes on the producers and marketers at all level of marketing chains. This book aims to provide some insights on the marketing system of sheep in Sudan with a special focus on the production sector in the North Kordofan, Gadarif and Khartoum states in Sudan. Specifically, it intends to; (i) provide a better understanding of the existing sheep marketing system, (ii) identify key constraints and potentials, (iii) describe the marketing channels and margins and; (iv) measure the competitiveness and comparative advantage of the sheep industry using policy analysis matrix (PAM) framework. Based on the findings, this book recommend that there is a need to reorganize and shorten the marketing channel, to institute a price support for the supply of fodder, provide water and veterinary care, and waive income taxes on the farmers and traders.

Production and Marketing of Sheep on the Bolivian Altiplano

Production and Marketing of Sheep on the Bolivian Altiplano PDF Author: Robert Scott Sly
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
A study was undertaken to evaluate the general sheep marketing process in Bolivia, to determine the present economic structure of farm units belonging to Altiplano sheep producers, to analyze the economics of marketing Altiplano sheep at an earlier age, and to analyze the economics of using various local products as a supplemental sheep feed in Bolivia. In general the Bolivian sheep marketing process is inadequate and inefficient because of lack of marketing information, poor producer-buyer contact, lack of commercial sheep transportation, slaughterhouses lacking in facilities and hygienic conditions, and apparently unattractive retail methods. By selling their relatively unproductive male sheep before they are one year old and replacing them with ewes and yearling ewes, the results of the study indicate that the "criollo" and semi-improved sheep producers could increase the return to their sheep enterprise by 43 percent and 10 percent, respectively, and that they could increase the value of sheep available for sale or trade by 67 per cent and 13 percent, respectively. To help determine the economics of feeding sheep a supplemental ration in Bolivia, a sheep feeding experiment was des1gned to test three breed-types of sheep, and two roughage-to-concentrate ratios. Two hundred and thirty-five lambs were fed for 63 days. The results of the study indicate that fattening lambs commercially in Bolivia is potentially profitable.

Sheep and Goats in Developing Countries

Sheep and Goats in Developing Countries PDF Author: Winrock International Livestock Research and Training Center
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
The objectives of this study are to assess the role of small ruminants (sheep and goats) in the food production systems of developing countries, examine their advantages and disadvantages, analyze the constraints limiting their further contribution to the welfare of small farm/low income rural producers, prescribe measures for overcoming these constraints, and make recommendations related to potential donor involvement in support of the development of sheep and goat production. Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.
