Prices were lowest in the Southeast New York prices in 1959 averaged cents compared with cents for the Southeast, Prices of some brands of margarine varied more than others. However, differences in average prices among regions were greater than differences among groups of similarly priced brands of margarines in the same region. Most differences in average prices were attributable to differences in the distribution of sales among the price groups within regions, In 1959, sales of higher priced margarine (super brands and nationally advertised brands) exceeded 74' percent of New York sales, but in the Southeast the lower priced margarines were about 66 percent of sales. Also, yields on September 1 were put at a record bushels an acre, up a bushel from last year. Demand for soybeans continues strong and the new crop now being harvested will move at high prices. Prospective utilization of billion bushels exceeds the crop but falls short of the record disappearance of about 1 billion bushels. Carryout stocks on September 1, 1972, will be near this year's low operating level. Processors this marketing year may not crush quite as many beans as 197 0/ 7 1's record of 760 million bushels. Annual processing capacity has expanded to nearly 900 million bushels. With excess capacity, crushing margins may be lower than the 26 cents per bushel last season and sharply under the 50 cents in Demand for soybean oil and meal remains strong but soybean supplies are limited and prices are higher. Among soybean oil's chief competitors, lard production in probably will decline 5 to 7% from last year, about offsetting prospects for a 10% increase in cottonseed oil output. Excerpt from Fats and Oils Situation: March 1962 Record supplies of soybeans are available for the rest of the 1961-62 marketing year. In view of this, prices will be governed almost entirely by the loan rate and the CCC sales policy. Until May 31, the CCC takeover date for beans under loan, prices to farmers are expected to continue relatively steady, averaging slightly above the support price Of $2-80 per bushel. This would continue the rise from.$2.20 last October to in February. After May 31, the CCC sales price will be at least cents per bushel over the loan rate and this probably 'will have a stabilizing effect on soybean market prices until new crop beans become available in late September or early October. Soybean crushings probably will set a new record of about 430 million bushels, approximately 7 percent above last year's grind. Ex ports are expected to total a record 170 million bushels, nearly one third higher than in 1960-61. This would leave a carryover of around 55 million bushels on October 1, 1962, about 8 percent of the 1961 crop compared with 6 million bushels a year earlier. Stocks of 55 million bushels would represent about one month's requirement for crush and ex port. A substantial part of the carryover of old crop beans will be in the hands of CCC. Commercial stocks of beans next fall probably will be small, inasmuch as lower prices expected for new crop beans will dis courage holding more than a minimum. The support rate for 1962 crop beans will be per bushel, 5 cents less than 1961, and prices next fall will likely reflect the lower support.
