The Rationale of Operative Fracture Care

The Rationale of Operative Fracture Care PDF Author: Joseph Schatzker
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662024837
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 445

Book Description
After the publication of the AO book Technique of Internal Fixation of Fractures (Miiller, Allgower and Willenegger, Springer-Verlag, 1965), the authors decided after considerable discussion amongst themselves and other members of the Swiss AO that the next edition would appear in three volumes. In 1969, the first volume was published (the English edition, Manual of Internal Fixation, appeared in 1970). This was a manual of surgical technique which discussed implants and instruments and in which the problems of internal fixation were presented schematically without radio logical illustrations. The second volume was to be a treatise on the biomechanical basis of internal fixation as elucidated by the work done in the laboratory for experi mental surgery in Davos. The third volume was planned as the culminating effort based upon the first two volumes, treating the problems of specific fractures and richly illustrated with clinical and radiological examples. It was also to discuss results of treatment, comparing the results obtained with the AO method with other methods. The second and third volumes were never published. The second edition of the AO Manual appeared in 1977. It dealt in greater detail with the problems discussed in the first edition, although it still lacked clinical exam ples and any discussion of indications for surgery. Like the first edition, it was trans lated into many languages and was well received. Finally, after 22 years, the much discussed and much needed third volume has appeared.

Manual of Disaster Medicine

Manual of Disaster Medicine PDF Author: N.D. Reis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364283440X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 483

Book Description
This book is not a learned treatise. Its purpose is to render practical instruction to all those physicians. surgeons, adminis trators, and paramedical personnel who have to act in war or disaster situations. As a manual it is in no way a substitute for existing detailed and specialized texts on the various aspects of trauma surgery and management: rather have we attempted to collate the most essenlial knowledge required to organize and afTord medical aid whenever civilian or military disaster strikes. The man on the spot is hardly ever a specialist, hence the need for a imple s general manual of instruction. The organizational aspects of medical services in war are very similar to those required for coping with a disaster: indeed the military are often called to cope with civilian disasters. Our duty is to be prepared, so as not to lose life and limb for lack of foresight. There are repetitions in the book for which no apologies are made, since they always concern invaluable knowledge. The chapters are organized to afford an understanding of the organization of medical services, the cause of wounds and trau matic disease, and the pathophysiological processes resulting from the different kinds of trauma. The management of treating casualties is divided in each section into the three basic eche lons: on site (at the actual place of wounding), at the medical (battalion) aid station and in the field or base hospital.
