Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Insects For nearly twenty years Professor Slingerland, as Assistant Entomologist of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, devoted the greater part of his time to studying the insect problems encountered by the fruit-growers of New York State. The results of some of these studies were published as bulletins of the Station, but a large amount of material remained unpublished. It was the idea of making this material available to other workers and at the same time bringing together in con nected form all the more important known facts concerning the insect enemies of our deciduous fruits, that led Professor Slinger land in the fall of 1908 to begin writing this book. During the few remaining months of his life he worked rapidly, and in spite Of failing health wrote accounts of more than one-half Of the apple insects and some others, mostly scale insects. After Professor Slingerland's death in March, 1909, I collected and preserved the manuscript, thinking that it might be possible to publish it without much additional work. While the treat ment of each insect was complete in itself, the Whole was so dis connected that this plan had to be abandoned. Accordingly, in the summer of 1910 I undertook the task of completing the book, following Professor Slingerland's outline. In doing so, I have made free use of his unpublished notes, and most of the illustra tions are from his photographs. Citrus Fruit Insects (Classic Reprint)

Citrus Fruit Insects (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Henry Josef Quayle
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780364224205
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 82

Book Description
Excerpt from Citrus Fruit Insects It has been estimated that the average cost of fumigation per tree, taking the whole of the citrus belt, amounts to about 30 or 40 cents, which means an expense of approximately $30 to $40 per acre, and this is done on an average about every other year. This is intensive insect fighting, but when the improved market value of the fruit is considered, it is money judiciously spent with such a valuable crop as the orange or lemon. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Vegetable-Garden Insects IN the present work we have attempted to bring together in concise and usable form what is known in regard to the habits, life history and control of the insect enemies of vegetable-garden crops in the United States and Canada. Much of this infor mation has been published in technical journals and in the bulletins and circulars of the State Experiment Stations and Federal Government, where it is available only to the special student who has access to the few large libraries that collect and preserve this type of literature. We have endeavored thoroughly to digest this mass of material and present it in a form adapted to the needs of the gardener and vegetable grower. In regard to methods of control we have tried to eliminate as far as possible useless and impracticable recommendations and include only those found to be effective under commercial conditions or such as would seem to be worthy of trial. It has seemed better to state frankly that the problem of control in certain cases has not been solved than to suggest remedies that would lead to disappointment.
