Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Chemical Physiology No apology is necessary in presenting to the American medical public the work of one so widely known and universally acknowledged as an authority as Professor Lehmann. In so doing, however, I am surrounded with more than ordinary difficulties. A correct English translation of a German work is no easy task; but when the original is not a full discussion of the subject considered, but as compressed a statement of facts as is compatible with clearness, the difficulty of avoiding idiomatic expressions is greatly increased. From Dr. Lehmann's views of the forces operative in living organisms, I must express my dissent. Dr. Jackson has been kind enough, at my request, to prepare an article on these views, stating the doctrines which he has so ably advocated for many years. To adapt the work for the use of students of physiology, I have incorporated in the text additional matter (derived mainly from notes on Dr. Jackson's Lectures, Carpenter's Human Physiology, Todd and Bowman's Physiological Anatomy, Kolliker's Microscopic Anatomy, &c.), of a more purely physiological nature, which will be found included in brackets, thus [ - ]. Short notes have also been added, in the shape of an Appendix, on kindred subjects not treated of by the author; and illustrations selected from various sources have been introduced, instead of referring, as the author has done, to the "Atlas of Physiological Chemistry, by Otto Funke." Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Physiology I have (been induced to undertake this Work with a view to supply a want which has long/been felt by the student of Physiology-rof a condensed work which should embrace all the most import ant facts connected with the subject. The limited amount of time at the disposal of the student of medicine is not insufficient to enable him. To wade through the more elaborate treatises and although chiefly intended for the student, it is to be hoped that it may prove serviceable to many medical practitioners, more especially those who may have pupils under their instruction. In its construc tioii, I have availed myself of all the more impor tant Works On Physiology. I am also indebted for many views expressed in this Work to the lectures on Physiology delivered by Prof. John N. Reid, M.D., of Victoria College, Toronto, during my academic course. It is my ardent hope that it may cfiect the desirable object for which it is intended in a satis factory manner; and if so, I shall feel greatly rewarded for my exertions. Laboratory Manual of Elementary Chemical Physiology and Urine Analysis (Classic Reprint)

Laboratory Manual of Elementary Chemical Physiology and Urine Analysis (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John Harper Long

ISBN: 9781330673522
Category : History

Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Elementary Chemical Physiology and Urine Analysis This little book is an outgrowth of the course given to second year students in the Medical School of Northwestern University, and represents in its present form the practical laboratory work as now followed in the course of study required for graduation. The time devoted to the study of chemistry and chemical physiology in our American medical colleges has been altogether too short, and only within very recent years, with a few notable exceptions, has any attempt been made to impart systematic knowledge in this direction. But now the views of medical teachers are undergoing a rapid change and among the scientific studies recognized as forming a rational groundwork for the study of medicine proper, physiological chemistry is justly regarded as of the first importance. It is the belief of the Author that instruction in chemistry should be given through two years of the course of the medical student. While it may be urged that general chemistry forms no proper part of the curriculum of the medical school it is certainly true that no one of our schools can afford to abandon it until it is generally agreed to make it a requirement for admission. But this is a long way in the future. In his first year work, therefore, the student should be taught the elements of general chemistry both in the classroom and the laboratory, the laboratory work consisting of simple experiments followed by qualitative analysis. Such a course opens the way for the laboratory practice in chemical physiology in the second year, and this should be made practical and simple. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Chemical Physiology and Pathology I have selected the title Chemical Physiology in preference to that of Physiological Chemistry, as the subjects are treated rather from the point of view of their function in. The body, than from that of their chemical relationships to one another; hence the book deals with a department of Physiology more than with a department of Chemistry. Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry (Classic Reprint)

Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Elias H. Bartley
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330611388
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry That there is considerable difference of opinion among teachers of chemistry as to what portions of the science can, with most profit, be presented to the medical student, is evidenced by the number and variety of small laboratory manuals for the use of medical students that have appeared within the past few years. Some of these books deal largely with the detection of poisons, a subject that in actual practice is always entrusted to the professional chemist. Others devote a great deal of attention to training the student in analytical methods, to sanitary analysis, or to the examination of foods or drugs. Another class devote most attention to the chemistry of the tissues and secretions and proximate principles of the human body. All of them, however, recognize the importance of the gross analysis of urine, many however, treating the subject from the purely chemical side. While it will be admitted that all these subjects are important for medical students to know, it must also be admitted that the time usually given to the subject of chemistry is too limited for such an extensive course. A medical college is a technical school for the training of young men or women in the science of the prevention or the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The chemical teaching should, therefore, be directed to this purpose, and should consist in teaching the fundamental principles and the application of these principles to the science of medicine, especially to the diagnosis and treatment of diseased conditions. Such applications of the science of chemistry can rightfully be grouped under the head of clinical chemistry. This little manual, the second edition of which is now presented, is the outcome of this idea gradually developed during the past twenty years of teaching in the Long Island College Hospital. In preparing this edition the author has thoroughly revised the book, added much new matter including many new processes, some of which are original. Book Description
Excerpt from The Essentials of Chemical Physiology for the Use of Students In spite of these changes, the variety Of which produces the great complexity Of the adult organism, there are many cells which still retain their primitive structure; notable among these are the white corpuscles of the blood. A cell may be defined as a mass Of living material containing in its interior a more solid structure called the nucleus. The nucleus exercises a controlling influence over the nutrition and subdivision Of the cell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
