La medicina legal española no se ha caracterizado, en general, por una destacada orientación anatomopatológica. Los aspectos clínicos y de laboratorio de la disciplina han tenido tradicionalmente una mayor preponderancia. Por el contrario, la Patología Forense ha sido la columna vertebral de la Medicina Legal o Forense en los países anglosajones. Por dicho motivo, a diferencia de lo que sucede en esos países, no existen en España textos específicos de Patología Forense y la bibliografía en español en este ámbito se encuentra limitada a la parte dedicada a estas cuestiones en los manuales y tratados de Medicina Legal, bajo la denominación, no muy actual, de Tanatología, o a las muy escasas y, en general, antiguas monografías sobre temas concretos. A fin de colmar esta laguna bibliográfica, los profesores de Medicina Legal de la Universidad de Santiago coordinados por el profesor don Luís Concheiro. Catedrático y Director del Instituto de Medicina Legal de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, han realizado la encomiable tarea de la traducción de esta obra al español, aunando con rigor los aspectos idiomáticos y técnico-científicos. No cabe duda de que existen otros magníficos textos de Patología Forense que merecen igualmente ser traducidos al español, pero pensando, en primer término, en los alumnos que cursan la asignatura de Medicina Legal en las Facultades de Medicina, la considerable amplitud de aquellos los hace poco recomendables como textos universitarios. Por otra parte, y a pesar de su aparente carácter conciso, este Manual de Patología Forense de Di Maio y Dana podrá ser también de utilidad para los profesionales de la Medicina Forense, pues contiene una notable cantidad de información muy acertadamente sistematizada por estos dos destacados representantes de la Patología Forense americana, que convierte a este Manual en un excelente libro de consulta rápida.
