A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish PDF Author: John Butt

Book Description
(abridged and revised) This reference grammar offers intermediate and advanced students a reason ably comprehensive guide to the morphology and syntax of educated speech and plain prose in Spain and Latin America at the end of the twentieth century. Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.

Selected Poetry of Francisco de Quevedo

Selected Poetry of Francisco de Quevedo PDF Author: Francisco de Quevedo
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226698912
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Francisco de Quevedo (1580–1645), one of the greatest poets of the Spanish Golden Age, was the master of the baroque style known as “conceptismo,” a complex form of expression fueled by elaborate conceits and constant wordplay as well as ethical and philosophical concerns. Although scattered translations of his works have appeared in English, there is currently no comprehensive collection available that samples each of the genres in which Quevedo excelled—metaphysical and moral poetry, grave elegies and moving epitaphs, amorous sonnets and melancholic psalms, playful romances and profane burlesques. In this book, Christopher Johnson gathers together a generous selection of forty-six poems—in bilingual Spanish-English format on facing pages—that highlights the range of Quevedo’s technical expertise and themes. Johnson’s ingenious solutions to rendering the difficult seventeenth-century Spanish into poetic English will be invaluable to students and scholars of European history, literature, and translation, as well as poetry lovers wishing to reacquaint themselves with an old master.

On Modern Women and Their Rights

On Modern Women and Their Rights PDF Author: Carmen de Burgos
Publisher: Escribana Books
ISBN: 9781940075624
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
In this book, Carmen de Burgos elaborates extensive and erudite arguments to counter the anti-feminist assertions that female difference leads of necessity to inferiority. She challenges the phrenological definition of women as intellectually inferior to men by bringing to bear recent findings which point to the fallacy of a direct relationship between the size of the brain and an individual's intelligence. She refutes the notion that women are by nature, due to their nervous system, more volatile and passionate than men by highlighting the numbers of crimes of passion committed by men as opposed to women, and noting that it is men who start wars and abuse their mates. Burgos also provides a historical overview of women's participation in important historical and cultural movements. This volume has been carefully edited and translated by professor Gabriela Pozzi and Keith Watts from Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

The Basque Dialect of Lekeitio

The Basque Dialect of Lekeitio PDF Author: José Ignacio Hualde
Publisher: Universidad del Pais Vasco
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
This book is a study of the Basque variety spoken in Lekeitio (Vizcaya). As such we have intended to make a direct contribution to Basque dialectology, aiming at setting certain standards for research in this area. In addition, we believe that some of the materials assembled in this work will be of interest to a larger audience beyond Basque specialists. It is for this reason that we decided to write the present book in English. In our opinion, certain linguistic aspects are treated in more detail here than in any previous work on any other Basque variety. A case in point would be accentuation, both at the lexical level and in its relation to the syntactic process of focalization.

The Prodigal Prophet

The Prodigal Prophet PDF Author: Timothy Keller
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0735222088
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
An angry prophet. A feared and loathsome enemy. A devastating storm. And the surprising message of a merciful God to his people. The story of Jonah is one of the most well-known parables in the Bible. It is also the most misunderstood. Many people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with Jonah: A rebellious prophet who defies God and is swallowed by a whale. But there's much more to Jonah's story than most of us realize. In The Prodigal Prophet, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller reveals the hidden depths within the book of Jonah. Keller makes the case that Jonah was one of the worst prophets in the entire Bible. And yet there are unmistakably clear connections between Jonah, the prodigal son, and Jesus. Jesus in fact saw himself in Jonah. How could one of the most defiant and disobedient prophets in the Bible be compared to Jesus? Jonah's journey also doesn't end when he is freed from the belly of the fish. There is an entire second half to his story--but it is left unresolved within the text of the Bible. Why does the book of Jonah end on what is essentially a cliffhanger? In these pages, Timothy Keller provides an answer to the extraordinary conclusion of this biblical parable--and shares the powerful Christian message at the heart of Jonah's story.
