Arming the Western Front

Arming the Western Front PDF Author: Roger Lloyd-Jones
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131717853X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
The First World War was above all a war of logistics. Whilst the conflict will forever be remembered for the mud and slaughter of the Western Front, it was a war won on the factory floor as much as the battlefield. Examining the war from an industrial perspective, Arming the Western Front examines how the British between 1900 and 1920 set about mobilising economic and human resources to meet the challenge of 'industrial war'. Beginning with an assessment of the run up to war, the book examines Edwardian business-state relations in terms of armament supply. It then outlines events during the first year of the war, taking a critical view of competing constructs of the war and considering how these influenced decision makers in both the private and public domains. This sets the framework for an examination of the response of business firms to the demand for 'shells more shells', and their varying ability to innovate and manage changing methods of production and organisation. The outcome, a central theme of the book, was a complex and evolving trade-off between the quantity and quality of munitions supply, an issue that became particularly acute during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. This deepened the economic and political tensions between the military, the Ministry of Munitions, and private engineering contractors as the pressure to increase output accelerated markedly in the search for victory on the western front. The Great War created a dual army, one in the field, the other at home producing munitions, and the final section of the book examines the tensions between the two as the country strove for final victory and faced the challenges of the transition to the peace time economy.

Scientific and Engineering Principles

Scientific and Engineering Principles PDF Author: Murray Moo-Young
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483148459
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 811

Book Description
Advances in Biotechnology, Volume I: Scientific and Engineering Principles is the first of a series of three volumes and is based on the proceedings of the Sixth International Fermentation Symposium (IFS-6) held in London, Ontario, Canada, 20-25 July 1980. This volume is organized into 13 sections and contains 111 papers which represent about 80% of the total submitted. Section I contains papers on microbial cultures. Section II presents studies on recombinant DNA and microbial genetics. The papers in Section III deal with plant and animal cell and tissue culture. Section IV examines the microbial oxidation of hydrocarbons. Sections V and VI focus on continuous cultures and free-cell fermentation, respectively. Section VII examines process dynamics and control. Section VIII takes up computer applications in biotechnology, while Section IX covers process instrumentation and analytical methods. Section X contains papers on transport phenomena, mixing and scale-up. Section XI examines the design and operation of unconventional bioreactors. Sections XII covers fixed-, fluidized- and semi-fluidized bed bioreactors, while Section XIII presents studies on immobilization bioreactors. The volume also includes invited keynote addresses of Nobel Laureate, Professor Joshua Lederberg, and Professor Elmer L. Gaden, Jr. Abstracts of the round-table discussion on Technology Transfer and Economics, and on Biotechnology Training Programs are presented as appendices.

Industrial Piping and Equipment Estimating Manual

Pages : 478

Book Description
Industrial Piping and Equipment Estimating Manual, Second Edition delivers a comprehensive overview of information that engineers, estimators, and managers need to develop estimates and create bids. Packed with worksheets covering combined and simple cycle power plants, refineries, compressor stations, ethanol, hydrogen and biomass plants, this reference helps construction engineers and estimators create bids where scope and quantity differences can be identified and project impacts estimated. This updated manual provides a comprehensive, accurate method for compiling piping and equipment man-hour estimates for industrial process plants—including Solar, Geothermal and Biomass Energy This comprehensive, current manual details scopes of work based on process and increased safety in field erection. Estimating methods and statistical applications reduce errors for estimators to produce accurate estimates, making it an ideal go-to reference for estimators, engineers and managers with a level of detail and equipment breakdown necessary for today’s complex industrial operations. Explains estimating methods, scopes of work, man-hour data tables, and estimate sheets to produce direct craft man-hour estimates, RFPs, and field change orders Includes scopes of work and man-hour data tables for any complexity of design, bid, and contract Identifies quantity differences using the comparison method to eliminate impacts between proposed and previously installed equipment Represents a broad mix of energy sources, including: Combined and Simple Cycle Power Plants, Refineries, Hydrogen Plants, Biomass, Ethanol, and Geothermal Power Plants, Compressor Stations, and Wastewater Treatment Plants
