Research results Show that material increases in yield per acre can be obtained by growing adapted varie ties, applying P205, and using irrigation water correctly. Grass-alfalfa mixtures containing 30 to 35 percent of tame grass by weight have been shown to yield as much and have the same feeding value as alfalfa. In addition, mixtures prevent invasion Of weeds and have a greater beneficial effect in soil and water conservation. The yield of hay from many Of the 2, 619, 000 acres of native meadows can be increased by the use of N and P205 and, if irrigated, by applying water properly. The quality of this hay can be improved further by making an earlier first and then a second cutting. A little m'ore than 561 million acres of land are grazed by livestock. Yield of much of the 9, 426, 000 acres of tame pasture on cropland could be doubled, and the rangelands of the West have a forage potential that could provide for an esti mated 5 million additional animal units. In both cases management is the key to greater per-acre production. Management of the grass crop by improved grazing methods, the use of fertilizers where applicable, and proper application of water on irrigated land are the principal means for increasing yield. Whether it be irrigated or dry land pasture or range, fundamental knowledge of the physiology Of each species and Of the ecology of the plant community is essential, both to the investigator and to the land Operator. Significant aspects of this problem are (a) the rate at which forages substitute for other feeds and (b) the labor, capital, and risk or uncertainty that are associated with different systems of livestock feeding. Substitution relationships in both crop rotation and livestock ration are involved. Capital and labor require ments of different systems of feeding are also important because they are costs and because many farmers have limited quantities of those resources. For the farmer who has limited capital, the choice of a 'method of using his forage crops may be a livestock system that will provide a relatively high rate of return for a small investment of capital. Likewise, a farmer who is not in position to stand great risks may prefer a livestock system that promises a steady income from year to year, even though it may not provide as high an average return during several years as some other system. But a farmer who has ample capital is in position to choose the method of utilizing forage creps that is likely to give him the highest average returns during a period of years, irrespective of the likelihood of large losses in some years. Excerpt from An Economic Analysis of Level Bench Systems for Forage Production in North Dakota The use of level benches can more than double alfalfa production, increase brome grass yield by almost 75 percent, and increase wheat yields by 5 or 6 bushels per acre over the yields produced on natural slopes. The increased yields are largely the result of the benches' ability to hold snow and snowmelt water. Benches, though similar to terraces, are much wider, level overall, and diked at the ends and front. Not enough benches are in actual farm use to provide cost and return data. Limited tests and experience elsewhere show that cost of bench construction is mainly affected by width of bench and complexity of slope. The cost per acre for construction may range from $25 for the narrowest benches on the gen tlest slopes to $353 for 70-foot benches on lo-percent slopes. Operating costs would be higher on a level bench system than on a natural slope, because each bench and its contributing area (an unter raced area above the bench), if there was one, would be treated as a single field for harvest ing and other operations.
