This study investigated archeological and architectural sites at the Hillsdale Lake project in eastern Kansas. Investigation was directed toward the recovery of data pertinent to the identification of local cultures and time periods, the development of settlement patterns for each culture, the reconstruction of paleo-environments, and the development of models of ecological adaption for cultural systems through time. This report provides new information on Nebo Hill trade relationships, the definition of the Hertha Phase a Late Woodland manifestation and on the Pomona focus, Steed-Kisker complex and Great Bend Aspect. The architectural study focused on the development of a model describing the effects of the area's environment on the vernacular architecture and the chronology of types of structures in the project area. In addition, site types were cataloged. The architectural survey of the Hillsdale Reservior area was conducted as part of the cultural resource study of the area. The architectural survey began in May 1975 and was completed in June 1977. The architectural survey of the Hillsdale Reservoir area included sites in rural Miami and Johnson Counties of northeast Kansas. The survey objectives were to record and evaluate all examples of typical and atypical architecture in the Hillsdale Reservoir area. All possible architectural sites indicated on the geological survey maps were investigated. All sites for which no structures were extant are listed in Appendix A. No towns, cemeteries, or churches were located in the survey area. The area surveyed included 72 intact rural farmsteads, 20 houses and abandoned sites. A total of 132 houses were located in the reservoir area. The majority of the houses were frame structures built between 1870 and 1975. This report includes a summation of the vernacular architectural styles seen in the area. This report also includes a description of all the other extant structures in the area including barns, root cellars, chicken coops, granaries, animal sheds, smokehouses, summer kitchens, outhouses, former school houses, fences, and bridges. Two copies of the data forms recorded during this survey were on file with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, and the Archaeology Laboratory, Department of Anthropology, Wichita State University.

This report summarizes all of the archaeological and architectural investigations performed to mitigate the impact of the creation of Hillsdale Lake in Miami and Johnson Countries, Kansas. This work, supported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, and performed by the Department of Anthropology of Wichita State University, produced information regrading societies ranging in age from late Archaic through historic Euro-American. Particularly important contributions include innovative means of reconstructing the pre-historic environment, a predictive model for site locations which is probably generalizable to other regions, the use of thermoluminescent dating of heated cherts to date a late Archaic site, new information on Nebo Hill phase trade relationships, the definition of the Hertha phase--a Late Woodland manifestation of eastern Kansas and western Missouri, clarification of Pomona focus settlement patterns, a new suggestion regarding the origin of the Steed-Kisker complex, and the recognition of Great Bend Aspect hunting camps well to the east of the previously known Great Bend range.
