Birds and Small Mammals

Birds and Small Mammals PDF Author: R. E. R. Porter
Publisher: White Lion Publishing
ISBN: 9780478045192
Category : Agricultural pests
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Birds and small mammals cause losses to crops, damage stored food products, and may be a nuisance in buildings and parks in urban areas. This manual summarises the real risks from these pests and gives practical advice on what can be done, what is worth trying and what is ineffective, and lists the source of various products available. The information, derived from scientific research, is intended mainly for commercial growers, but much of it is useful for home gardeners, warehouse managers, and pest control officers. Throughout this manual the authors stress environmentally friendly control methods, which are usually the most effective for the money spent, help to sustain a healthy living countryside, and are safest to humans.

Ecology of small mammals

Ecology of small mammals PDF Author: D.M. Stoddart
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400957726
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
From their largely descriptive beginnings about a half century ago, studies on the ecology of small mammals have mushroomed in number, scope, content and complexity. Yet strangely, or perhaps not so strangely if one considers the extent and complexity of ecological interactions, the main problems for which the early workers sought answers still defy complete analysis, and basic hypotheses remain untested if not even untestable. The same holds true for so many branches of animal ecology that it seems to be the complexity of the concepts that frustrates efforts rather than the subject species. Like all branches of science, small mammal ecology has been subject to a series of fashionable approaches, one following another as tech nology penetrates previously impregnable regions. Doubtless the future development of our science will be punctuated by wave upon wave of new endeavour in whole fields that are perhaps even yet unidentified. Answers to the complex questions which ecologists ask do not come easily. Increasingly though, they arise in direct proportion to the efforts expended upon their elucidation. Many studies have achieved such a high level of elegance, in terms of manpower and apparatus, that there is a feeling that questions asked when such resources are unavailable are not worth asking. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many a complex model has failed fully to explain the phenomenon for which it was construc ted because of a lack of basic field data on the species' natural h~story.

Publisher: CSIRO PUBLISHING
ISBN: 1486305687
Category : Nature

Book Description
Australia’s introduced vertebrate pest species cost at least $1 billion annually in economic, environmental and social impacts. The Guide to Introduced Pest Animals of Australia is a comprehensive, practical guide to 60 introduced pest animal species present in Australia, including 27 mammals, 18 birds, nine freshwater fish, two amphibians and four reptiles. It contains descriptive information to identify each species in the field, including distinctive physical characteristics, size, weight, colouration, diet, breeding behaviour, habitat preferences, and information about footprints, dung, scats and audible animal calls. Each species profile is accompanied by practical management information, maps and high-quality photographs – allowing readers to learn about pest species in their local area, what problems they might cause, and what control options exist for management. This guide also contains a number of emerging high-risk pest species that may pose a significant threat to our natural environment, economy, agriculture and human health. Whether you are a farmer, natural resource manager, public land manager, pest controller, teacher, student, field naturalist or wildlife ecologist, this easy-to-use guide will help you identify Australia’s most significant introduced pest animals in your local area.
