Nutrition and Behavior
Author: J.R. Galler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461572193
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 520
Book Description
After the appearance of the four-book series Human Nutrition: A Compre hensive Treatise, it became apparent to the editors that an important area of nutrition had been overlooked, namely, behavioral aspects of nutrition. There are two areas in which nutrition and behavior interact. On the one hand, mal nutrition may play a major role in determining behavior; alternatively, often aspects of behavior influence the eating habits of populations and individuals and thus affect their nutritional status. Volume 5 of this series speaks eloquently to both features of this important topic. Various aspects of the influence of behavior modification and nutrition have been explored by a number of qualified investigators. It is hoped that this volume will prove a valuable addition to the subjects covered in the other volumes. Roslyn B. Book Description
Reviews the changing hypotheses and concepts concerning theeffect of malnutrition on mental development. Experimentalresearch during the past 8-10 years has shifted from andemphasis on mental retardation to an emphasis on behavioralchanges induced by malnutrition. Further, researchers nowconsider the role of environment in cognitive developmentand how malnutrition interferes with the interaction of thechild with its environment. Research on malnutrition inanimals and its relevance to humans is discussed. Specifictopics include: 1) background to the study of malnutritionin relation to child mental development and invironment ; 2) effects of malnutrition and nutrient consumption on thecentral nervous system ; 3) effects of malnutrition onsubprimate behavior, environmental adaptation and learning ; 4) effects of nutrition on human and nonhuman primates.

Malnutrition, Behavior, and Social Organization
Author: Lawrence S. Greene
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 360
Book Description
Abstract: The widespread and significant effect of malnutrition and environmental impoverishment on the behavioral characteristics of many human populations is described. Behavioral variations influence sociocultural characteistics of communities. The behavioral variations can have an environmentally-produced, biological basis. Evidence indicates that malnutrition and experiential deprivation have significant effects on neurological development and behavioral capacity of individuals. Future analyses of sociocultural dynamics must include a more systematic consideration of the effect of environmental resources on biologically-based, behavioral characteristics. Current social scientific conceptualization of sociocultural organization and change must expand to include the biological perspective.
