Book Description
Excerpt from How to Make the Farm Pay: Or the Farmer's Book of Practical Information on Agriculture, Stock Raising, Fruit Culture, Special Crops, Domestic Economy and Family Medicine In this land of schools, where every child can have an educa tion, knowledge is easily disseminated. Improved methods of culture can be spread broadcast over the land by means of books and papers. For these reasons American farmers are more intelligent than the same class in any other country. Few farmers are now so ignorant as to scoff at agricultural informa tion. They desire it, and welcome it. The trouble has been and is, that it is not given them in a form adapted to their wants. There have been many technical and scientific Works, containing most valuable information, but in language not readily under. Stood. These works are very largely theoretical, and the practical is not so distinctly separated as to be easily applied. They have performed a noble service, for without the informa tion they have contained, but little advance would have been made. Book Description
Excerpt from Making the Farm Kitchen Pay In the first place do not attempt to dry too much corn at once. A better plan is to do a little at a time, and in that way the labor is less and results more satisfactory. Select perfect roasting ears of sweet corn - not over-ripe nor under-ripe - plunge immediately after picking into unsalted boiling water, cover closely, and boil actively about five minutes, or just enough to set the starch and milk. Book Description
Excerpt from We Farm for a Hobby: And Make It Pay Unless your memory is abnormally short you recall that 1932 was the year the roof of the world nearly fell in. Civilization appeared to be crum bling to bits. The least pessimistic could foresee some such crisis as that which culminated in the bank holiday of 1933. I have never been a bull on the United States nor, in fact, of bullish tem perament. My way is to expect the worst and pre pare for it. So it was in the fall of 1932 that I took serious thought of what I, and my family, could do to hedge against the economic and social disaster that appeared about to engulf the nation. Book Description
Excerpt from How the Farm Pays: The Experiences of Forty Years of Successful Farming and Gardening Question. What, in your opinion, Mr. Crozier, are the chances of making a farm pay, if the owner is unable to superintend it himself, and has to rely on the knowledge of hired superintendence? This is a question that has been asked me scores of times each season, in regard to the business of market gardening, and my unvarying reply has been, that the chances for success are all against the person undertaking such a business under such conditions. Making Farm Woodland Improvement Pay: June 1953 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description
Excerpt from Making Farm Woodland Improvement Pay: June 1953 The small woodland owner commonly objects to practicing good forest management on the grounds that It costs too much to get started or I haven°t got the time or money to invest in it. To help solve this perennial economic problem of small forest manage ment, the Carbondale Research Center of the Central States Forest Experiment Station set up two farm woodland demonstration areas on its Kaskaskia Experimental Forest in Illinois. The demonstrations are intended to show how farm labor can be used for woods work dur ing slack seasons and to show that producing timber can add to the farm income. This report gives the financial results of the first three years operation. Farm woodland management is especially important in the Central Region because so much of the forest land is owned by farm ers. In fact, in southern Illinois and vicinity, three-fourths of the forest area is in such small woodlands. So continued timber production in the region depends greatly upon the small forest. The Young Farmer's Manual, Vol. 2

The Young Farmer's Manual, Vol. 2 PDF Author: S. Edwards Todd
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265554708
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
Excerpt from The Young Farmer's Manual, Vol. 2: Or, How to Make Farming Pay, Giving Plain and Practical Details of General Farm Management; With a Chapter on Soils, and Their Cultivation, and Much Other Valuable Matter of a Practical Character The first volume of the young farmer's manual treats of Mechanical Agriculture, and should be read with this, as it is intimately connected with it. The first chapter of this volume is made up of brief articles on the General Management of the Farm. The chapters bn Soils, Pulverization, and Fertilizers, are as brief as they can be, in order to give a young farmer a thorough understanding of that branch of agriculture. A good knowledge of these branches lies at the very foundation of a good system of Farming. My first volume was written while I lived on a farm near Lake Ridge, Tompkins County, N. Y where I was born, and resided until I was forty years of age. From Lake Ridge I removed to Auburn, N. Y. In the former part of 1865, I moved my family to New York City. Read the Preface to Volume I. I have endeavored to reduce the scientific to practice; and I think no intelligent reader will fail, with a dictionary, to get a correct idea on every subject, as I have aimed at simplicity of style. Book Description
Excerpt from Capacity to Pay and Farm Financing Sheets in the farm account files of the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Illinois. These cash incomes refer to the operators, not to the farms operated. For owners, they cover the entire farm income; for part owners or tenants, they cover only the part owner's or tenant's share of the total farm income. In caleu lating these and certain other factors, use was made of the office data sheet shown in the Appendix, page 225. The tenure of the operator greatly affects the amount of capital needed. Furthermore the source of credit, the type of security given, and the interest charges all affect either the risk created by borrowing or the cost of such borrowing. Consequently in the following discus sion the facts pertaining to these points in the debt situation on the farms are described briefly.
