Book Description
Excerpt from Makers of Arkansas History The author wishes to see the children of Arkansas as familiar with the leading men of their own State as they are with the great men of the Nation. In presenting this little book to the public, he does so in the hope that it may contribute something toward this end. The book follows largely the biographical plan, grouping the facts of each phase of our history about some character eminent in its development. This method, compared with the chronological method, has the advantage not only of being more vivid, but of stimulating in boys and girls an ambition to excel and a legitimate state pride. The latter cannot be too much emphasized. It takes form not only in a broad patriotism, but also in the study of local history and in the erection of appropriate memorials and monuments. It is hoped that these chapters may tend to increase in Arkansas this civic spirit. Several distinguished names.have been omitted, because the author was compelled at times to choose between two or more men who were types of the same phase of the State's history. The book is designed for use either as a textbook or as a supplementary reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas The aim of this book will be as Macaulay expressed it to make the past present, to bring the present near, to invest with the reality of human flesh and blood beings whom we are too much inclined to consider as personified qualities, rather than to rob history of its human element by a cataloguing of facts without effort to read their meaning. With Lord Acton, the sanest historic authority, we believe that History is the con science oi mankind, and have therefore set out thousands of facts as a potent influence in showing what the pioneers really did - their modus operandi - their hopes, joys and sorrows, asparts of an experience we are interested to know and from which we may one and all draw general lessons of moral and political wisdom. Book Description
Excerpt from The High Lights of Arkansas History There is in the history of the State of Arkansas no want of the sort of material which makes for a flavor of individuality. In the choice of things chosen for this narration of events - chosen and arranged to tell the story of the growth of enterprise and what not wrought in Arkansas in the space of nearly four centuries since the time of Desoto - the aim has been to choose those things which have made the history of Arkansas different which give it its flavor of interest quite its own. But last, and first also - first as the motive for playing up the high lights of the history of Arkansas like street lights, hung one at every street corner, that those who pass may see the way plainly - the story of Arkansas is told here step by step, one thing at a time and everything in the order of its doing, each as something done apart from the many other processes helping always to make the complex story of life and growth complete, so that any who should like such a work may have by him a handy manual of the really significant facts concerning the his tory of the State. History of Methodism in Arkansas (Classic Reprint)

History of Methodism in Arkansas (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Horace Jewell

Book Description
Excerpt from History of Methodism in Arkansas For a number of years I have greatly desired to see a well-written history of Methodism in Arkansas, and sincerely hoped that some one thoroughly qualified for the work would undertake the task. In 1869, the Little Rock Annual Conference passed this resolution: "Resolved, That the Presiding Elders be, and are hereby constituted, a Committee on the History of Methodism in Arkansas, to collect items of interest connected therewith." If anything ever came of this action of the Conference I have never heard of it. In 1878, or near that time, the White River Conference requested Rev. John M. Steele to undertake the work of preparing a history of Methodism in Arkansas. He immediately began the collection of material for the work, and had succeeded in collecting much valuable information, but was called away by death before it was completed. It was left in such condition that no one else could properly arrange the material he had collected. I have undertaken to gather up the material that has been preserved in the minutes of the Annual Conferences, in District and Quarterly Conference records; in manuscripts written by some of our old pioneer preachers, in articles written for our Church papers; in memoirs of our deceased preachers; in letters from brethren and friends; in incidental allusion found in books, and in conversation with old residents of the State. From the information gathered from all these sources, I have endeavored to present a connected history of Methodism in Arkansas. In many instances where I had to depend upon the personal recollection of brethren, I found the dates to be conflicting, and in such cases I have reconciled the dates as best I could.
