Book Description
This thesis describes a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating a technique for stable isotope enrichment called Magnetically Activated and Guided Isotope Separation (MAGIS). Over the past century many enriched isotopes have become available, thanks largely to electromagnetic separators called calutrons. Due to substantial maintenance and operating costs, the United States decommissioned the last of its calutrons in 1998, leading to demand for alternative methods of isotope separation. The work presented here suggests the promise for MAGIS as a viable alternative to the calutrons. The MAGIS technique combines optical pumping with a scalable magnetic field gradient to enrich atoms of a specific isotope in an atomic beam. Benchmarking this work against the calutron using lithium as a test case, the author demonstrated comparable enrichment in a manner that should scale to the production of similar quantities, while requiring vastly less energy input.

The Cyclorator

The Cyclorator PDF Author: Robert S. Livingston
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Isotope separators
Languages : en
Pages : 48

Book Description
When the time of flight principle is applied to isotope separation in a magnetic field, a separation in time is obtained which depends directly upon the difference in isotopic masses. Modulation of the ion beam is necessary for collection of separated isotopes. The relative merits of intensity, direction, and energy modulation are discussed. Separation of uranium isotopes, with low enrichment, was achieved by energy modulation. The cyclorator is found to have the same fundamental limitations as the calutron, the most significant being loss of resolution with increased throughput.

Magnetic Isotope Effect in Radical Reactions

Magnetic Isotope Effect in Radical Reactions PDF Author: Kev M. Salikhov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709165695
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 155

Book Description
In the last two decades it was demonstrated that, in addition to masses and charges, magnetic moments of nuclei are able to influence remarkably chemical reactions. This book presents the physical background (both theoretical and experimental) of the magnetic isotope effects in radical reactions in solutions. Special attention has been paid to the quantitative interpretation of the available experimental data. This book will be useful for physicists, chemists and biologists employing the isotope effect in their investigations as well as for those involved in isotope separation and isotope enrichment projects. Additionally, the magnetic isotope effect appears to be important in geochemistry and cosmochemistry. The book can be recommended for postgraduates and senior undergraduate students.

Electromagnetic Separation of Radioactive Isotopes

Electromagnetic Separation of Radioactive Isotopes PDF Author: Michael J. Higatsberger
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709150876
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 325

Book Description
During the war years the techniques for electromagnetic separation of radioactive nuclides have made great progress. Ever since then further improvements have been accomplished to separate stable nuclides and in more recent years special attention has been given to the problem of separating radioactive nuclides, especially in con nection with spallation and high energy fission studies. This poses slightly different problems, as the amounts of radioactive material may be very small indeed, highly diluted and the whole separation procedure has often to be a very rapid one, as some of the nuclides have a very short half-life. . On quite a number of the bigger machines very valuable operating experience has been gained and it was, therefore, a very good idea to hold a symposium' covering all the aspects of electromagnetic separation, where technicians could discuss the recent advances in this wide field. It is to be welcomed that at this symposium all aspects were discussed, from the details of vacuum systems, as well as sub jects like magnets, ion sources, scattering mechanisms, to the health physics problems connected, for example, with the electromagnetic separation of plutonium, as well as applications of mass separation. These proceedings are, therefore, essential for all those who do work in this field or contemplate to enter into it. Vienna, May 1961.
