Science Or Pseudoscience PDF Author: Henry H. Bauer

Book Description
A book that all scientists should read, and a book that all who are interested in the unexplainable will want to read, Bauer explores how examining anomalies have profited humankind and restores the respectability--and necessity--of such pursuits in a fascinating overview of science and the pursuit of the unknown. Although science attempts to draw a clear line separating its endeavours from those of "pseudoscience," Henry Bauer reveals that the distinction is both equivocal and misleading. Setting aside science's snowy mantle of truth, Bauer presents pseudoscience--or anomalistics--not as the opposite of science but as something that develops parallel to it. Science assumes anomalies--that is, phenomena that contradict the existing store of knowledge--result from error, contamination, or even deception: in short, from bad research technique, at best, and deliberate hoax, at worst. Anomalists, by contrast, accept such occurrences, often on the basis of eyewitness claims, as important in themselves and worthy of further study, even if they contradict prevailing theories and offer a minimal degree of reproducibility.Science or Pseudoscience explores the diffuse and porous borders between mainstream and unorthodoxy. A scientist himself, Bauer points out that some phenomena that have turned out to be spurious, such as polywater and cold fusion, were for a time taken quite seriously by respected members of the scientific community. Other anomalies, such as ball lightning and meteorites, were dismissed by many scientists but turned out to be legitimate discoveries. Meanwhile, science has failed to prove that phenomena encompassed by the "big three" subjects in anomalistics--parapsychology, ufology, and cryptozoology (e.g., the Loch Ness monster)--do not exist. Rather, science theorizes that these phenomena cannot exist, since today's scientific laws seem to hold them to be impossible. Bauer discusses anomalies such as archaeoastronomy (e.g., Stonehenge) and bioelectromagnetics and looks at how institutional, commercial, and political interests influence borderline research in mainstream laboratories. He also draws a distinction between fraud and commercial huckstering, on the one hand, and genuine knowledge-seeking about matters ignored by the established intellectual disciplines, on the other. Bauer notes that the more closely anomalistic research approaches science, the more strenuously it is criticized by the establishment, often in terms of heresy. Reminding us that geniuses are cranks who happen to be right while cranks may be geniuses who happen to be wrong, Science or Pseudoscience offers a measured and thoughtful assessment of this volatile debate.

Psychic Surgery and Faith Healing

Psychic Surgery and Faith Healing PDF Author: Jessica Bryan
Publisher: Weiser Books
ISBN: 9781578634415
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
A journalistic quest that begins with the couldn't-be-more-personal experience of her own psychic surgery, Bryan takes the reader from The Faith in God Spiritual Church outside Reno, Nevada to the Pangasinan Province of the Philippines Island of Luzon, famous for its healers who perform surgery without cutting open the body - bare-handed surgery, where no anesthesia is used, and there is no pain, scars, or infection. Even as quantum physicists close in on a scientific description of how it works, Bryan asks: "Is psychic healing a miracle of God or a trickery of fake blood and cotton balls perpetrated by charlatans?" She goes on to explore how it might well be both. This is an open, honest, in-depth look at the multiple, often contradictory realities of faith healing and the ripples it casts into the realms of physics, metaphysics, spirituality, and higher consciousness. Into this heartfelt first person account of a life-changing journey from patient to student to sometimes teacher, Bryan weaves a parallel narrative full of historical detail and cultural perspective on telekinesis, the magnetic force of cells, trance mediums, miracles, the placebo effect, and the power of expectation, as well as minor and major deities on the order of John of God, Franz Mesmer, Emanuel Swedenborg, Albert Einstein, and Shirley MacLaine.

The Yod Book

The Yod Book PDF Author: Karen Hamaker-Zondag
Publisher: Weiser Books
ISBN: 160925662X
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 536

Book Description
An explanation of atypical horoscope configurations, with analyses of celebrity birth charts to see how these astrological patterns play out in real life. A yod is formed when two planets that are sextile also form an inconjunct to another planet. These planets are in different signs and modes and are deeply significant, for they usually symbolize patterns in families that have lasted for generations. This is what Hamaker-Zondag discovered when she started to research the inconjunct aspect as it related to a yod. Also included in this book is a complete discussion of how the energies of unaspected planets, and planets in duet (that only aspect each other) are expressed in a person’s birth chart. Hamaker-Zondag analyzes the background and places it in a broader perspective, including how she works with elements, modes, orbs, and other astrological factors when interpreting this aspect. All in all, this is one of the most exciting books on aspect interpretation published in recent years! Included are great case histories: you have a chance to examine the Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp, Kenneth Starr, Bill Clinton scenario. And Princess Diana, Prince Charles, and Prince William are not without these family patterns. She uses the examples of Gandhi, Vaclav Havel, Khomeini, Solzhenitsyn, Willy Brandt, C. G. Jung, Jim Jones, and others. To help you work with your own clients, Hamaker-Zondag brings in the charts of her personal clients and explains them in depth. When you’ve read this book, you’ll want to check out the charts of everyone you know!

Book Description
If you could converse with a wise spirit entity and ask any question you wished, what would you ask? By conversing with Sir Garrod, a spirit entity channeled through author Bernice Kelman, we can discover that we are much more than we thought we were and that reality is far greater than we have ever imagined. Everything that can be learned from him can be applied in very practical ways by learning how to find and use the energy of unconditional love to lead a more meaningful life. The spirit entity can provide guidance on a wide variety of questions, ranging from "How can I deal with my spouse, my boss, my mother-in-law?" to "Who was I in another life?" or "What happens when we die?" Sir Garrod explores the responses to these and other questions. He cautions, "Believe nothing, including what I tell you."
