Immunobiology of the Macrophage

Immunobiology of the Macrophage PDF Author: David S. Nelson
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483274772
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 652

Book Description
Immunobiology of the Macrophage presents an account of the state of knowledge of the immunobiology of the macrophage. The book’s contributors—immunologists of diverse scientific and geographic backgrounds—have been encouraged to give personal accounts of developments in their special fields of interest as well as critical surveys of the backgrounds leading to these developments. The book begins with a study on the functions of macrophages in the initiation and regulation of antibody responses in vitro. This is followed by separate chapters on topics such as the role of macrophages in making antigen more immunogenic and less tolerogenic; functional distinctions between macrophages at different sites; and the role of the macrophage in antigen recognition by T lymphocytes. Subsequent chapters examine interactions between macrophages and lymphocytes in the production of interferon and other mediators of cellular immunity; macrophage cell lines and their uses in immunobiology; and cytotoxic macrophages in allograft rejection.

Book Description
The Reticuloendothelial (RE) Society, which is concerned with advd~cement of knowledge concerning the many diverse functions of RE cells, organizes national and international meetings and publishes a scientific journal. The VIII International Congress of the RE Society was held in Jerusalem, Israel, June 18-23, 1978. The Congress had as its scientific objec, tive a wide range of sub jects concerning the RE System, especially as related to macro phage function and interaction with lymphocytes. Emphasis of the Congress was placed on the nature and function of macrophages and other cells of the RE System with reference to immune responses, anti-infectious activity, tumor immunity, autoimmunity, and trans plant rejection. The secretion of soluble factors by rnacrophages and lymphocytes and the mode of action of these factors on other cells was stressed. During the Congress some discussion was entertained concerning the controversy as to what constitutes the "RE System" per se. Some investigators feel that the phagocytic activity of rnacrophages is the most important aspect of the RE System playing also a major role in many parameters of immunity. Mononuclear phagocytes include tissue rnacrophages as well as cir culating monocytes and their precursors. Although phagocytosis is a major functional activity of these cells, it is only one of several activities.

The Role of Lymphocytes and Macrophages in the Immunological Response

The Role of Lymphocytes and Macrophages in the Immunological Response PDF Author: Dudley C. Dumonde
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364265133X

Languages : en
Pages : 158

Book Description
This volume contains papers presented at a symposium on "The Role of Lympho cytes and Macrophages in the Immunological Response" at the XIII International Congress of Haematology, Munich, August 1970. This symposium was designed to highlight current work submitted to the Haemato logy Congress which related to the role of cellular cooperation in induction and expression of the immune response. The symposium was divided into two parts. The morning session consisted of invited papers dealing with various general aspects of the field (papers 1 to 5) which were relevant to the afternoon session, which con sisted of free communications submitted to the Congress. In the discussion it was emphasized that whereas lymphocyte activIty ultimately underlies all immune induction, the cellular and humoral manifestations of the immune response are governed by distinct yet interacting compartments of the ly.mphoid system. Much interest centred on the role of thymus-derived lymphocytes as cooperator cells in antibody formation; and the mechanisms by which macro phages assist antibody production. The discussion brought together work on lympho cyte activation, the generation of lymphocyte activation products (lymphokine factors) and the cellular events underlying the induction and expression of the Immune response. The helpful cooperation of Springer-Verlag has enabled rapid publication of the papers presented at this symposium. London, February 1971 D. C. Lymphocytes, Macrophages, and Cancer

Lymphocytes, Macrophages, and Cancer PDF Author: G. Mathe

Book Description
Fresh living Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BeG), injected i.v. into (C57BI/ 6xDBA/2)FI mice, activated peritoneal macrophages rendering them highly cytotoxic for tumor cells in vitro. This cytotoxic activity w~s already maximal 14 days after injection of 1 mg of BCG and remained stable when 3 or 5 mg of BCG were given. At the same time spleen cells of the BCG-treat~d mice showed strongly depressed responses to the T-cell mitogens,PHA and Con A, irrespective of the dose of BCG injected. The inhibitory effect was shown to be mediated by suppressor cells which had characteristics of macrophages since they could be removed by carbonyl iron and magnet treatment and were adherent to plastic. In contrast to it was observed after injec tion of 1 mg of BCG, these suppressor cells alone did not account for the depression of T-cell re.sponses induced by higher doses of BCG. Nylon-nonadherent cell populations obtained from spleen cells treated with 3 or 5 mg BCG partially retained the inhibitory activity suggesting that suppressor T cells were also induced after injection of high doses of BCG. In contrast, the responses to the B-cell mitogen LPS of unfractionated and macrophage-depleted spleen cells were not affected or significantly enhanced depending on the dose of BCG injected.

The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health

The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health PDF Author: Kitty Verhoeckx
Publisher: Springer

Book Description
“Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.

Biology of the Lymphokines

Biology of the Lymphokines PDF Author: Stanley Cohen
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483271420
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 645

Book Description
Biology of the Lymphokines discusses the scope and diversity of lymphokine research. This book focuses on the studies on lymphokines, such as those involving cellular source, chemical nature, purification strategies, and bioassay limitations. The mechanism of lymphokine action, lymphokines in vivo, and value of lymphokine quantitations are also covered. This text describes the repertoire of lymphokines produced by various lymphoblastoid cell lines and its significance for coping with the problem of large scale lymphokine production. The anti-viral and general immunoregulatory properties of interferons and rationale developed for integrating interferons with the family of lymphokines are likewise deliberated. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on lymphokines.
