Macroeconomics After Thatcher and Reagan
Author: John N. Smithin
Publisher: Aldershot, Hants, England ; Brookfield, Vt., USA : E. Elgar
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
This widely acclaimed book critically assesses the attempts to put the various 'conservative economic' theories into practice. It identifies the disparate and often conflicting elements of the new economic philosophy including monetarism, 'supply-side' economics and the new classical economics. It distinguishes the purely macroeconomic parts of the strategy from those with a more microeconomic focus such as deregulation and privatization. It makes a detailed comparison of the very different directions which the 'conservative revolution' has taken in Britain and the United States, and suggests some alternative policy principles for the future.

Macroeconomics in Retrospect
Author: David E. W. Laidler
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 9781843763840
Category : Macroeconomics
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
David Laidler is one of the leading scholars in the history of economic thought and macroeconomics. This important collection brings together nineteen of his essays on topics in the history of macroeconomics. It begins with a paper on Adam Smith and ends with a discussion of the implications of Newclassical economists' ideas on the role of economic ideas in conditioning agents' activities. Other chapters deal with the major themes developed by monetary economists in the intervening years. Two of the essays appear in their current form for the first time, and several others are reprinted from difficult-to-obtain sources. They should be of interest not just to historians of economic thought, but also to economists more generally.

Competing Schools of Economic Thought
Author: Lefteris Tsoulfidis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540926933
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 389
Book Description
1. 1 Introduction This book was born out of our reaction to the way in which the usual texts cover the subject of the history of economic thought. In most of these texts, there is a tendency to emphasize the similarities and differences between all the important economists and form a repository of encyclopedic knowledge where one can study the seemingly important economic ideas. In this book, we argue that it is much more fruitful to focus on the essential ideas of each and every school of economic thought and relate them to present-day problems, than to engage into a sterile discussion of the ideas and the lives of the great economists of the past. Thus, although this book deals with the history of economic thought, it does not necessarily follow a historic (in the sense of the order of presentation) approach, but rather a logical one, that is to say it deals with the social conditions associated with the emergence of a school of economic thought, its evolution, and its contemporary in?uence. One cannot write a book on the history of economic thought without writing separate chapters on the major economists of the past, that is, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, and J. M. Keynes. Of course these economists formed schools of economic thought, that is, the classical and the Keynesian.
