Book Description
Excerpt from Mackinac Island and Sault Ste Marie Concerning this fair North of ours, many books have been written. Its annals have been set down by Carver, LaHontan, Schoolcraft, Jameson, Henry, Perrot, Charlevoix, Joliet, Marquette, and others whose work is shrouded in the mists of time. It has been the scene of self-abnegation such as the world has seldom witnessed; courage almost beyond the ken of mankind; cruelty to chill the soul with horror. It has experienced strange vicissitudes of fortune. It has sustained one of the world's most remarkable and interesting peoples. Its destinies have hung upon threads so slight as to be now almost forgotten. It has known totems innumerable and three mighty nation's flags. Shall we consecrate our lines and compilations to these worthies of old? It is little they care for our words of praise. Or to the Judge, who has gathered their works with loving care, and who every good citizen of the North hopes will be spared for many years, to a life of usefulness and uprightness? Other and better books have been inscribed to him. Or to our next Governor? But he is a writer of books. Sit you down with comfort, my friend, on the shady side of the deck, or wherever you happen to be, and learn of the North. If we diverge from the beaten path here and there, remember that our text is a large one; and that precious stones are sometimes found in the most out of the way places. Fall to, then, with all the anticipation in the world, and may you read with pleasure and profit, for these pages are dedicated to You. Sault Ste. Marie and Beyond a History of Its People 17th - 21st Centuries

Sault Ste. Marie and Beyond a History of Its People 17th - 21st Centuries PDF Author: Sandra Rousseau
Publisher: Awaken Ink Incorporated
ISBN: 9781989142172

Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
History, as it happened, on both sides of the turbulent rapids at the Sault, dividing a settlement into two countries. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and southern Lake Superior, historical characters tell their stories in their own words: the Anishinaabe defeating the destructive Iroquois; the travels and determination of the Jesuit priests; Alexander Henry's adventures from Mackinac Island to Lake Superior; fur traders with Indigenous wives evolving into a new culture. This book explores the culture of the Anishinaabe homeland; French fur trade commerce; entrepreneurs' shipbuilding and copper mining; war declared by the Americans; Canada rescued by its Indigenous neighbours; and religious encroachment. Ultimately, creating a vibrant Sault Ste. Marie. Tim C. Review of Sault Ste. Marie and Beyond I just completed this wonderful book and thoroughly enjoyed it! The descriptions of life over the centuries through the eyes of the voyageurs, coureurs des bois, merchants, and indigenous participants and their shaping of early Canada (and the USA for that matter) really made the history come alive for me and expanded my point of view. And to think this knowledge was imparted to me by a person related to the great Tecumseh! I particularly liked the fact that you included historic paintings and pictures in the text. This added a lot to my ability to imagine the scenes of the time. I also learned about the Sault, an area of which I knew little. You are a great ambassador for the City! Finally, the best quote of the book in my mind: from Elder Willard Pine " there are no bad people, only bad choices ."

The Founding Mothers of Mackinac Island

The Founding Mothers of Mackinac Island PDF Author: Theresa L. Weller
Publisher: Michigan State University Press
ISBN: 9781611863956
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Drawing on a wide array of historical sources, Theresa L. Weller provides a comprehensive history of the lineage of the seventy-four members of the Agatha Biddle band in 1870. A highly unusual Native and Métis community, the band included just eight men but sixty-six women. Agatha Biddle was a member of the band from its first enumeration in 1837 and became its chief in the early 1860s. Also, unlike most other bands, which were typically made up of family members, this one began as a small handful of unrelated Indian women joined by the fact that the US government owed them payments in the form of annuities in exchange for land given up in the 1836 Treaty of Washington, DC. In this volume, the author unveils the genealogies for all the families who belonged to the band under Agatha Biddle’s leadership, and in doing so, offers the reader fascinating insights into Mackinac Island life in the nineteenth century.
