Category : Coral reef animals
Languages : en
Pages : 150

Book Description
Not far beneath the surface of the sea wait the world's last unexplored wild places. On the sun-drenched crests of tropical coral reefs and in the dim uncharted waters just below them live the most biologically productive and diverse communities on our planet. No ecosystem is more varied and beautiful. And none is in more danger of perishing in our lifetimes. Rushing to the aid of these robust-yet-fragile natural treasures are adventurous men and women eager to face the challenge of discovering, recording, and preserving these imperiled ecosystems and the intresting creatures that call them home. Living Mirrors: A Coral Reef Adventure introduces us to Howard and Michele Hall, the husband-wife underwater cinematography team who have joined forces with biologists, conservationists and filmmakers to bring the rest of us the most intimate look at coral reefs and the lands, seas and peoples around them, we may ever get. Living Mirrors is the companion volume to MacGillivray Freeman Film's documentary feature Coral Reef Adventure, filmed exclusively for IMAX theatres and large format cinemas. Living Mirrors

Living Mirrors PDF Author: Ohad Nachtomy
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190907347
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
In Living Mirrors, Ohad Nachtomy examines Leibniz's attempt to "re-enchant" the natural world-that is, to infuse life, purpose, and value into the very foundations of nature, a nature that Leibniz saw as disenchanted by Descartes' and Spinoza's more naturalistic and mechanistic theories. Nachtomy sees Leibniz's nuanced view of infinity- how it differs in the divine as well as human spheres, and its relationship to numerical and metaphysical unity-as key in this effort. Leibniz defined living beings by means of an infinite nested structure particular to what he called "natural machines"-and for him, an intermediate kind of infinity is the defining feature of living beings. Using a metaphor of a "living mirror," Leibniz put forth infinity as crucial to explaining the unity of a living being as well as the harmony between the infinitely small and the infinitely large; in this way, employing infinity and unity, we can better understand life itself, both as a metaphysical principle and as an empirical fact. Nachtomy's sophisticated and novel treatment of the essential themes in Leibniz's work will not only interest Leibniz scholars, but scholars of early modern philosophy and students of the history of philosophy and science as well.

Shooting in the Wild

Shooting in the Wild PDF Author: Chris Palmer
Publisher: ReadHowYouWant.com
ISBN: 1458715582
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
Longtime producer Palmer provides an in-depth look at wild animals on film, covering the history of wildlife documentaries, safety issues, and the never-ending pressure to obtain the money shot. Marlin Perkins, Jacques Cousteau, Steve Irwin, Timothy Treadwell, and many other familiar names are discussed along with their work, accidents, and in some cases, untimely deaths. Palmer is highly critical of Irwin, and offers fascinating revelations about game farms used by exploitative filmmakers and photographers looking for easy shots and willing to use caged animals to obtain them. He also considers the subliminal messages of many wildlife films, considering everything from Shark Week to Happy Feet and how they manipulate audiences toward preset conclusions about animal behavior. In all this is an engaging and exceedingly timely look at a form of entertainment the public has long taken for granted and which, as Palmer points out, really needs a fresh and careful reconsideration.

Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems

Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems PDF Author: Yossi Loya
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319927353
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 984

Book Description
This book summarizes what is known about mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) geographically and by major taxa. MCEs are characterized by light-dependent corals and associated communities typically found at depths ranging from 30-40 m. and extending to over 150 m. in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. They are populated with organisms typically associated with shallow coral reefs, such as macroalgae, corals, sponges, and fishes, as well as specialist species unique to mesophotic depths. During the past decade, there has been an increasing scientific and management interest in MCEs expressed by the exponential increase in the number of publications studying this unique environment. Despite their close proximity to well-studied shallow reefs, and the growing evidence of their importance, our scientific knowledge of MCEs is still in its early stages. The topics covered in the book include: regional variation in MCEs; similarities and differences between mesophotic and shallow reef taxa, biotic and abiotic conditions, biodiversity, ecology, geomorphology, and geology; potential connectivity between MCEs and shallow reefs; MCE disturbances, conservation, and management challenges; and new technologies, key research questions/knowledge gaps, priorities, and future directions in MCE research.
