Macedonia has been contested by its three neighbours – Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece – during and since the demise of the Ottoman Empire. But the Macedonian Question extends far beyond the contested borders of Macedonia to immigrant communities in Europe, Australia and North America. The contributors to this collection explore the contemporary repercussions of the Macedonian Question, which has long been at the heart of Balkan politics. The volume recognises Macedonia as a global issue, and focuses on the politics of identity and difference in both homeland and diaspora.The contributors argue that Macedonia as place and as concept is forged within a transnational network of diasporas, local communities, states and international institutions. They examine the increasingly important role of transnational bodies – including the European Union and human rights NGOs – in regulating relationships between states and minority groups, as well as in promoting multiculturalism and civic participation. They consider the role of scholarship and the media in defining Macedonia and its inhabitants. They also draw attention to the struggles of individuals in constructing, negotiating and even transforming their identities in the face of competing nationalisms and memories. In the process, they re-evaluate ‘ethnicity’ as a conceptual tool for understanding difference in the region, and raise questions about the implications of recognising, and not recognising, difference at the political level.

Greeks and Macedonians are presently engaged in an often heated dispute involving competing claims to a single identity. Each group asserts that they, and they alone, have the right to identify themselves as Macedonians. The Greek government denies the existence of a Macedonian nation and insists that all Macedonians are Greeks, while Macedonians vehemently assert their existence as a unique people. Here Loring Danforth examines the Macedonian conflict in light of contemporary theoretical work on ethnic nationalism, the construction of national identities and cultures, the invention of tradition, and the role of the state in the process of building a nation. The conflict is set in the broader context of Balkan history and in the more narrow context of the recent disintegration of Yugoslavia. Danforth focuses on the transnational dimension of the "global cultural war" taking place between Greeks and Macedonians both in the Balkans and in the diaspora. He analyzes two issues in particular: the struggle for human rights of the Macedonian minority in northern Greece and the campaign for international recognition of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of the construction of identity at an individual level among immigrants from northern Greece who have settled in Australia, where multiculturalism is an official policy. People from the same villages, members of the same families, living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne have adopted different national identities.

"During the Ottoman period Balkan collective identities existed without national content. As the historian Eric Hobsbawm has observed, the 'ethnicity of any people in southeastern Europe is an eternal matter of debate'. Throughout the 19th century, European nationalist impulses did influence this region, and some national narratives were legitimated with the establishment of new Balkan states. The Macedonian narrative was a conspicuous exception. In the interwar period (1918-1941), Macedonian nation-building efforts were instead characterized in negative terms as the 'Macedonian Question', and were framed as irredentist challenges to Balkan stability. The Macedonian narrative did not receive official validation until the establishment of the Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia by Josip Broz Tito in 1944, as part of the Socialist Federalist Republic Yugoslavia (SFRY). Tito's strategy for unifying a multiethnic SFRY involved sustaining a dynamic tension among the different national communities. As part of this strategy Tito paradoxically encouraged the affirmation of a Macedonian identity as a counterweight to the influence of other ethnic groups. It was Tito's aspiration that a new Yugoslavian identity would transcend the conflicting narratives of the constituent nationalisms that the SFRY encompassed. However, with the dissolution of the SFRY in 1992, and the subsequent declarations of independence by its constituent republics (including Macedonia), the legacy of Tito's strategy ironically set the stage for a revival of competing irredentist claims. The assertions of a 'Great Serbia', 'Great Macedonia', 'Great Albania', etc. are legacies of Tito's failed attempt to forge a stable Yugoslavian identity. In the present day, Balkan national narratives confront each other in mutually - constitutive antagonism. This paper argues that the Macedonian nation-building effort is not only an unfinished project, but represents a revived, 21st century version of the older 'Macedonian Question' that brings with it the potential for substantial regional conflict."--Abstract.

This book examines the relationship between national history, identity, and politics in twentieth-century Macedonia. It focuses on the reverberating power of events surrounding an armed uprising in August 1903, when a revolutionary organization challenged the forces of the Ottoman Empire by seizing control of the mountain town of Krusevo. A century later, Krusevo is part of the Republic of Macedonia and a site for yearly commemorations of 1903. In the course of the intervening hundred years, various communities have vied to establish an authoritative account of what happened in 1903--and to weave those events into a longer and wider narrative of social, cultural, and national evolution. Keith Brown examines how Krusevo's residents, refugees, and exiles have participated--along with scholars, journalists, artists, bureaucrats, and politicians--in a conversation about their vexed past. By tracing different approaches to understanding, commemorating, and narrating the events of 1903, he shows how in this small mountain town the "magic of nationalism" by which destiny is written into particular historical events has neither failed nor wholly succeeded.
