The present dissertation deals with the problem of under-utilization of collision channels and other related problems in wireless networks. It deals with the design of random access protocols for wireless systems and provides a mathematical framework for performance evaluation of multihop based heterogeneous wireless networks. This thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, we propose new versions of slotted aloha incorporating power control, priority and hierarchy. Our simulations were important to understand the behaviour of such a system and the real impact of involved parameters (transmit power, transmit rate, arrival rate, hierarchy order). Both team problem (common objective function is maximized) and game problem (each user maximizes its own objective) were discussed. Introducing hierarchy seems to provide many promising improvement without/or with a low amount of external information. We also proposed two distributed algorithms to learn the desired throughput. Next, we developed in the second part an analytical Framework to evaluate performances of multihop based heterogeneous Wireless networks. We built a cross-layer model and derived expression of stability, end-to-end throughput and end-to-end delay. Furthermore, we provided an accurate approximation for the distribution of end-to-end delay in multihop ad hoc networks (operating with slotted aloha protocol). As a direct application, we highlighted how streaming and conversational flows could be supported in this class of ubiquitous networks. The third part of this thesis is devoted to understanding and modelling of IEEE 802.11e DCF/EDCF-operated multihop ad hoc networks. We indeed built a complete and simple APPLICATION/NETWORK/MAC/PHY cross-layered model with finite retries per packet per flow. We analyzed the stability of forwarding queues and derived expression of end-to-end throughput. We finally proposed a Fountain code-based MAC layer to improve the throughput/fairness over the network.

In particular, it deals with the design of random access protocols for wireless systems and provides a mathematical framework for performance evaluation of multihop- based heterogeneous wireless networks. A new modeling framework is also introduced for the analytical study of MAC protocols operating in multihop wireless ad hoc networks, i.e., wireless networks characterized by the lack of any pre- existent infrastructure and where participating devices must cooperatively provide the basic functionalities that are common to any computer network. To show the applicability of our modeling framework, we model wireless ad hoc networks that operate according to the IEEE 802.11 standard. To accomplish this, we present a comprehensive analytical modeling of the IEEE 802.11 and the derivation of many performance metrics of interest, such as delay, throughput, and energy consumption.

This thesis presents a cross-layer design and optimization for emerging wideband wireless networks supporting multimedia applications, considering the interactions of the wireless channel characteristics, the physical and link layer protocols, and the user-perceived Quality-of-Service (QoS). As wireless channels are error-prone and broadcast in nature, both the error control mechanisms and the Media Access Control (MAC) protocols are critical for resource utilization and QoS provisioning. How to analyze, design and optimize the high-rate wireless networks by considering the characteristics of the propagation channels and wideband communication technologies is an open, challenging issue. In this thesis, we consider two important wideband wireless systems, the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and the Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. First, we propose the packet-level channel models based on Finite State Markov Chains (FSMCs) for the two systems, which present the statistical properties of the propagation channels and the transmission systems. Second, by incorporating the proposed packet-level channel models, we develop analytical frameworks for quantifying the performance of the high-rate wireless networks, combining the channel fading, physical- and link-layer error-control mechanisms and MAC protocols. Third, to mitigate the impact of channel fading and impairments, a cross-layer joint error-control mechanism is proposed. In addition, we also investigate the impact of channel fading on the video streaming applications, and propose a simple admission control algorithm to ensure QoS. As considering the physical-layer characteristics is critical for ensuring QoS and efficiency of resource utilization, the packet-level channel models, cross-layer analytical frameworks, networking protocols and simulation methodologies proposed in this dissertation are essential for future proliferation of high-rate wireless networks.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are dynamically self-organized and self-configured, where the nodes in the network automatically establish an ad hoc network and maintain mesh connectivity. These properties make WMNs a key technology for next generation wireless networking. However, supporting Quality of Service (QoS) to enable multimedia services is still one of the major issues in next-generation WMNs. In distributed systems like WMNs, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer is considered very important in the IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks, as it supports many crucial operational functions. Hence, QoS support in WMNs can be enhanced through the efficient cross-layer design of MAC protocols that utilizes advanced physical layer technologies viz Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) with its multiple spatial channels that are capable of simultaneous receive or transmit streams. MIMO has become a very attractive technology in providing support for different QoS requirements. In this thesis we propose a novel QoS MIMO-aware MAC Protocol (QMMP). QMMP is a MAC protocol framework that exploits the MIMO system gains to boost QoS support. The proposed MAC framework includes the following components. The first component enables concurrent sharing of the increased MIMO bandwidth, i.e., instead of allocating all the spatial channels to one connection, connections can concurrently share the increase bandwidth via splitting the spatial channels. The second component reduces the medium access collisions problem. In distributed systems like WMNs, medium access collisions have a noticeably negative impact on resource (bandwidth) utilization as they leave the bandwidth unutilized for a long time. To address this problem, we propose a spatial channels sharing scheme during medium contention period. The third component boosts the bandwidth utilization during data transmission. We propose resource management schemes that adapt the physical data rate and the aggregation frame length according to the instantaneous channel quality. Then we propose a QoS-aware bandwidth provisioning mechanism that performs effective bandwidth distribution to further boost QoS support.
