Book Description
Excerpt from Luther, Vol. 4 "His most elaborate and systematic biography. . . is not merely a book to be reckoned with; it is one with which we cannot dispense, if only for its minute examination of Luther's theological writings." - The Athen um (Vol. I). "The second volume of Dr. Grisar's 'Life of Luther' is fully as interesting as the first. There is the same minuteness of criticism and the same width of survey." - The Athen um (Vol. II). "Its interest increases. As we see the great Reformer in the thick of his work, and the heyday of his life, the absorbing attraction of his personality takes hold of us more and more strongly. His stupendous force, his amazing vitality, his superhuman interest in life, impress themselves upon us with redoubled effect. We find him the most multiform, the most paradoxical of men. The present volume, which is admirably translated, deals rather with the moral, social, and personal side of Luther's career than with his theology." - The Athen um (Vol. III). "There is no room for any sort of question as to the welcome ready among English-speaking Roman Catholics for this admirably made translation of the first volume of the German monograph by Professor Grisar on the protagonist of the Reformation in Europe. The book is so studiously scientific, so careful to base its teaching upon documents, and so determined to eschew controversies that are only theological, that it cannot but deeply interest Protestant readers." - The Scotsman. "Father Grisar has gained a high reputation in this country through the translation of his monumental work on the History of Rome and the Popes in the Middle Ages, and this first instalment of his 'Life of Luther' bears fresh witness to his unwearied industry, wide learning, and scrupulous anxiety to be impartial in his judgments as well as absolutely accurate in matters of fact." - Glasgow Herald. "This 'Life of Luther' is bound to become standard. . . a model of every literary, critical, and scholarly virtue." - The Month. "Like its two predecessors, Volume III excels in the minute analysis not merely of Luther's actions, but also of his writings; indeed, this feature is the outstanding merit of the author's patient labours." - The Irish Times. "This third volume of Father Grisar's monumental 'Life' is full of Interest for the theologian. And not less for the psychologist; for here more than ever the author allows himself to probe into the mind and motives and understanding of Luther, so as to get at the significance of his development." - The Tablet. Book Description
Excerpt from Select Works of Martin Luther, Vol. 4: An Offering to the Church of God in "the Last Days" Truths are diminished from the sons of men that is, 'truths are not to be found among men; that is, fideli or faithfulness is not to be found. For the He brew anguage can say, there are not faiths in men, ' and also, God is our saving where we say the God of our salvation, ' and there is no more faith among men according to the common sayiniof the ancients, No trust can be placed any where.' ut we can never use truth' in the plural number. These things I say, that no one might understand that it is said that truths are perished 'from' or by' the sons, as if the sons of men had diminished the truths; though this also is true. The Complete Sermons of Martin Luther: Volume 4

The Complete Sermons of Martin Luther: Volume 4 PDF Author: Luther, Martin

Book Description
Martin Luther’s collected sermons for the church year were originally called postil or postilla (in German: Postille) which was originally a term for Bible commentaries. It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus" (after these words) referring to Biblical readings. Luther's postil was published in two series: the Church Postil and the House Postil. His published sermons and catechisms were by far his most popular. They did more to teach people the Reformation than any other book. Luther intended his postils to serve common pastors and people, and therefore was one of the greatest educational and devotional books of the Reformation. From the time Martin Luther published the first part in 1521, every annual cycle of sermons on the lessons, whether consisting of homilies or formal sermons, is termed a postil. This unabridged edition of Luther's writings of the works of Martin Luther is an accurate and clear translation. We have Presents the Church Postil as the mature Luther wanted it to be. It includes Luther’s extensive revisions to his own work. For those who are not familiar with the Church calendar year we have elected to number and title each sermon accompanied with a short description of the contents accompanied by the Bible verse. Thus it will look something like this: NO. 1 A KING ARRIVES FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT A Discourse on Christ Coming into Jerusalem TEXT: Matthew 21:1-9. The primary basis for the work is the comprehensive the 1905 translation of Luther's Church Postil by John Nicholas Lenker of which volumes 1-5 were originally published in Minneapolis by Lutherans of All Lands, 1904-1906, and volumes 6-8 were originally published in Minneapolis by The Luther Press, 1908-1908. In 1986 Baker Books reprinted this work. For convenience we have maintained the volume numbers of the more recent Baker Books reprint rather than the original volume numbers. Vol. 1. Sermons on Gospel Texts for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany (a reproduction of Vol. 10, The Precious and Sacred Writings of Martin Luther [Minneapolis: Lutherans in All Lands, 1905]). Vol. 2. Sermons on Gospel Texts for Epiphany, Lent, and Easter (a reproduction of Vol. 11, The Precious and Sacred Writings of Martin Luther [Minneapolis: Lutherans in All Lands, 1906]). Vol. 3. Sermons on Gospel Texts for Pentecost (a reproduction of Vol. 12, The Precious and Sacred Writings of Martin Luther [Minneapolis: Lutherans in All Lands, 1907]). Vol. 4. Sermons on Gospel Texts for the 1st to the 12th Sundays after Trinity (a reproduction of Vol. 13, The Precious and Sacred Writings of Martin Luther [Minneapolis: Lutherans in All Lands, 1904]). Excerpt from Luther, Vol. 2 "His most elaborate and systematic biography... is not merely a book to be reckoned with; it is one with which we cannot dispense, if only for its minute examination of Luther's theological writings." - The Athenaeum. "There is no room for any sort of question as to the welcome ready among English-speaking Roman Catholics for this admirably made translation of the first volume of the German monograph by Professor Grisar on the protagonist of the Reformation in Europe... The book is so studiously scientific, so careful to base its teaching upon documents, and so determined to eschew controversies that are only theological, that it cannot but deeply interest Protestant readers." - The Scotsman. "It is impossible to understand the Reformation without understanding the life and character of the great German. The man and the work are so indissolubly united that we cannot have right judgments about either without considering the other. It is one of Father Grisar's many merits that he does not forget for a single moment the fundamental importance of this connection. The man and his work come before us in these illuminating pages, not as more or less harmonious elements, but as a unity, and we cannot analyse either without constant reference to the other." - Irish Times. "Professor Grisar is hard on Luther. Perhaps no Roman Catholic can help it. But it is significant that he is hard on the anti-Lutherans also... He shows us, indeed, though not deliberately, that some reformation of religion was both imperative and inevitable... But he is far from being overwhelmed with prejudice. He really investigates, uses good authorities, and gives reasons for his judgments." - The Expository Times. "This Life of Luther is bound to become standard... a model of every literary, critical, and scholarly virtue." - The Month. "The most important book on Luther that has appeared since Denifle sepoch-making 'Luther und Luthertum.'...It is an ordered biography, . and is therefore very probably destined to a wider general usefulness as a Catholic authority." - The Irish Rosary.
