In many countries around the world, the idea of the welfare state is being called into question, while the topic of flight and migration is giving a boost to right-wing populism. Decades of powerful paradigms such as social solidarity and global justice are loosing acceptance, while fears of "uncontrolled immigration" undermine confidence in the functioning of the welfare state. Answers to the question of who belongs to "us" under which conditions and who is allowed to participate in welfare state services experience a dramatic shift. David Abraham explores the interrelation of immigration, integration and solidarity in the capitalist West of the 20th and 21st centuries. Dagmar Herzog documents how reproductive rights and disability rights, both latecomers to the postwar human rights canon, came to be seen as competing—with unexpected consequences.
